Can we normalise that sometimes, less is more in dog grooming? ❤️🐾

Not just with puppies, but with dogs of all ages.

Benji still struggles with head drying and having his feet brushed, but he’s making progress, one small step at a time.

Listening when a dog tells us something is too much is just as important as the groom itself. We don’t always need a perfect finish. Pushing beyond their limits won’t help them feel safe or enjoy grooming.

Sometimes, doing less today means making better progress tomorrow. 💪❤️

A good groom isn’t just about how your dog looks when they leave. It’s about how they feel throughout the whole experience ❤️

Here are some green flags to look for in a dog groomer:

✨ They’re not afraid to say “not today” if your dog is stressed, even if it means stopping and rebooking

✨ They explain what they’re doing and why, so you understand every step of the process

✨ They provide a calm, clean and safe environment where your dog can feel comfortable

✨ They ask about your dog’s triggers, past experiences, fears and little quirks before getting started

✨ They celebrate the small wins with you, whether it’s the first relaxed nail trim or the first full groom with fewer breaks

✨ They never rush your dog just to stick to a schedule. Your dog’s wellbeing comes first

✨ They’re honest about what your dog can manage and never promise a perfect haircut at the expense of their comfort

✨ They give you honest feedback after every groom and help you understand how to make future visits easier for your dog

👉 Because a good groomer doesn’t just groom your dog. They care about how your dog feels, too.

Puppies are wriggly. That’s not a personality quirk, it’s biology, and it matters more than people think when there’s sharp equipment involved.

Socialisation should start around 3 months old, not just with walks and experiencing the outside world, but with getting used to grooming too. The noise, the table, being handled, the clippers running nearby. I take it step by step. I do NOT cut on a puppy’s first appointment. It’s about building good grooming experiences, one small win at a time.

A 6-month-old puppy who’s never had any of that groundwork isn’t just a little behind. They’re starting from zero at an age where they’re bigger, stronger and often even more wriggly than they were at 3 months.

Scissors and clippers around a wriggly dog are already a skill. Scissors and clippers around a wriggly dog who has no idea what’s happening and has no trust built with me? That’s not a groom, that’s a safety risk, both for your puppy and for me.

So no, I won’t give your 6-month-old puppy a full groom with zero groundwork.

I’ll start where we should have started at 3 months: slowly, safely and at their pace, building the confidence and trust they need to become a calm, happy dog on my table for the next 15 years.

I’ve trained Petal since she was a puppy to accept the nail grinder, which is why she’s totally relaxed while getting her paw-dicure.
