Trying out the Freedom Bridle from

I’m really exploring the role of the bridle at the moment, and how different designs, pressure distribution and fit can influence the way our horses feel and respond.

Blondie doesn’t currently respond particularly well to bitless options, so rather than deciding that one approach is right for every horse, I’m interested in exploring the options available to us and finding what works for her.

The Freedom Bridle is designed to reduce pressure around the TMJ (temporomandibular joint), alongside other changes to how the bridle distributes pressure.

I’m still learning about the design and exploring how Blondie feels in it, but I think it’s important that we stay open-minded. Just because something works for one horse doesn’t mean it will work for another. And sometimes a horse does need influence on their body to work in function and that’s definitely the case for Blondie.

For me, it always comes back to the individual horse, their comfort, and being willing to keep asking questions of how we do things and can we be doing better ✌🏻

I wanted to show what the first try looked like because so often social media is filled with amazing finished products and like you I’m learning new things all the time so why not show you exactly that, me and my darling Zora learning a new thing. I want to help Zora to understand how to flex her lumbar-sacral junction more and this is one way I believe I can do so. It’s also a way of encouraging her to shift her weight forward and back with my energy which is needed when we ride. .pfh thank you for being my inspiration today 🥰

I saw a post the other day and it said to remember to enjoy spending time with your horses not just working on improving them and I felt it to my core. Remembering to have some joy with my horses is vital! To see the cross poles I so cheekily teased you will have to watch the whole video over on YouTube.

Horses don’t automatically choose the best way to use their bodies. They find solutions that work for them in the moment and then repeat those patterns, but those solutions don’t always support their long-term comfort and soundness in fact sometimes the opposite.
Blondie has a few things in her body that she struggles with, tight shoulders and some significant side bone in her front feet as well as old psd scarring in her hind suspensories, all these things combined as well as years of not great emotional regulation and then some years of many many homes haven’t helping her manage her body in a way that supported her comfort. And full transparency I have struggled to deeply change her movement patterns. She’s a different gal when it comes to relationships but in the body she was still holding old patterns that weren’t helping her.
This is something I think is so important for us to understand. Horses adapt to their physical limitations, balance and the demands placed on them, but just because a way of moving works for them doesn’t mean it’s the best option for their body.
Our job isn’t to force a horse into a shape or create a prettier outline. It’s to understand why they move as they do, recognise what their body is capable of, and help them find more comfortable, coordinated ways of moving.
With Blondie, the changes we’re seeing on the lunge are about helping her explore different movement solutions and better organise her body within her limitations.
I have been fascinated to learn new ways of helping horses with . Deepening my understood the body and learning how to shift these old patterns that are no longer serving the horses

You can be great at training a horse but if you don’t know a horse’s basic needs with management the training can become fruitless.
Posture is one of the be the biggest shifts for pain memory. If a horse has poor posture tight top line and no knowledge of finding a way of using their whole body in a soft way you can see every vet and get the all clear but still have an unhappy horse under saddle and on the ground.

There is no place for complex complete feeds in our horse’s diets, learning about how a horse digests is crucial horse knowledge that all horse owners can learn.
Turnout isn’t a bonus it’s a none negotiable part of a horse’s life. With friends and for as much of their 24hrs as you can. If this can’t be facilitated that needs to be addressed.
The old phrase of no hoof no horse is still absolutely valid. But more so the balance of the hooves and the health of the whole foot and how it relates to the body. Every horse can be barefoot but not every owner, expectation management is vital during transition. Some horses need time to recover from the damage in the feet without riding. Doesn’t mean they can’t be barefoot just means they need time to adjust without the pressure of ridden exercise.

Learning to ride bridleless has been the most eye opening experiences for me in my ridden career, I was shown I had become disconnected from riding with my seat, my hands despite being gentle where too involved.
I rode Zora in a bridle with a bit for the first time in months on Tuesday we have been riding bitless and bridleless for a while now. She felt so much lighter more on my seat than she’s ever been before and I really knew I could help her body with my body not just my hands.
Bridles have their place but so does learning to ride without one and going through this process has been so eye opening.
We do ride horses to help their bodies. There are certainly things that are hard to achieve from the ground so being able to move their body and shift old patterns is a big part of helping their biomechanics. In honesty this is a long way down the road of a horse’s rehab life, it’s not the first port of call when horses come to me for whole horse rehab. We are on the ground for a good while building strength and suppleness. Undoing old patterns and building new ones. But there is a time if the horse is destined to be a ridden horse that climbing aboard and working them from the saddle is helpful to them. And the use of a bridle with a bit can be a part of that. Never in a harsh way but to shape the body and show them how they can use the body differently if they need to.

It’s interesting to look at Zora in these two videos, it’s a balance and one I’m navigating with intrigue. As I always say I learn from the horses and share what I learn. I would love to hear what you see from these two videos. Gently now I’m doing my best remember 😆

I’ve started a series telling the story of all my magnificent mares on the long format platform and I wondered if you might like to go and watch. We have posted 1 all about my darling Mo, her whole life history with lots of throwback videos and memories. The most magical girl who deserves all the recognition. I hope you enjoy, it’s really special telling the story of my wonderful horses who have taught me so much. Eternally grateful to them. .
Looking back at these pictures I’m reminded how much I love this feeling with a horse. Second video going live at 6pm maybe that horse will take me back to jumping again? You will have to go and watch to find out.

This arena existed in my head long before it existed here.

Back in 2021, I first reached out to I didn’t know this project would come to fruition but I knew what surface I wanted to train on if it did.

Five years later… it’s more than I could have ever imagined

Plastic-free natural fibre. Irrigated from underneath and not a drop of wax in sight.

What we put underneath our horses’ hooves is so important. The surface affects how the hoof loads, absorbs force and interacts with the ground, which can influence the way a horse moves, recovers and strengthens or becomes injured.

I wanted a surface that could be managed with water rather than relying on wax to bind it together. With the research I did I learnt that wax can interrupt the horse’s natural slide of the hoof so it was an absolute no from me, but I knew I needed a surface that could withstand the changing climate, long hot summers and very wet winters.
I have planned every element of this project because we have very compromised horses that come to us and I knew a part of that planning was that my arena needed to be as consistent and reliable as physically possible. Noviun have done their research, been testing and trialling their product in the us for a long time and with some of the best riders in the world relying on it I knew I was in safe hands.
I have ridden on a lot of surfaces in my time and none compare to Noviun, you ride on it not in it, the horses feel softer and more able to move to their full potential as it’s so consistent they can trust it will feel good in every part of the arena. No dry and deep or hard and puddly. Noviun is the future, no more micro plastics and no more inconsistent surfaces that cause injuries.
