Last week we said goodbye to our Queen, Tricymoedd Whisper, our May May. With her passing comes the end of an era.

As breeders, we spend years talking about pedigrees, health testing, genetics, temperament and working ability. Every now and then, however, a bitch comes along who embodies everything you hope to preserve and build upon. May was one of those rare dogs.

Strong, healthy, resilient and dependable, she possessed the kind of genetics that cannot simply be recreated. She was never anxious, fearful or reactive. She met every challenge with quiet confidence, a steady temperament and an unwavering willingness to work. Trainable, intelligent and blessed with exceptional stamina, she remained healthy and active right to the end.

As a working gundog, she was everything we could have wished for. As a brood bitch, she stood the Tricymoedd line in fabulous stead, producing quality, healthy puppies who have gone on to live full and happy lives with their families. Her influence runs deep through our breeding programme and will continue for generations to come.

The true measure of a breeding bitch is not only what she achieves herself, but the legacy she leaves behind. May’s legacy is written in her descendants, in the qualities she consistently passed on, and in the standards she helped establish for Tricymoedd Labradors.

For those outside the breeding world, she was a beautiful Labrador. For those of us privileged enough to know her story, she was so much more. She was a matriarch, a foundation stone, and a once-in-a-lifetime bitch whose contribution can never truly be replaced.

For those of you who have lost a foundation dog, you will know the loss we feel right now, we bred her, trained her, worked with her, she gave us daughters and sons, and smiles.

We are forever grateful for her, but can take comfort in the wonderful living legacy she has left behind in her puppies. ❤️

🐾 Scottie Fun Fact! 🐾

Did you know that the Scottish Terrier earned the nickname “Diehard” because of its fearless determination and courage? Originally bred to hunt foxes, badgers, and other vermin in the rugged Scottish Highlands, Scotties may be small in stature, but they’re renowned for their bold personalities and unwavering spirit.

It got us thinking… 💭

What’s the most surprising, interesting, or little-known fact about your breed that even experienced dog people might not know?

Recently we lost a puppy.

It died.

Our vet believed that there was a congenital issue, the puppy failed to thrive at the point of weaning and we lost him.

Apart from the obvious upset and sadness from a breeders perspective, I had to manage and handle this issue with the prospective family, and the other families on the wait list for the litter. They had seen videos and pictures of the puppies since they were born, they too were invested.

It wasn't great, it didn't make me feel good at all, I really considered how best to deal with it, it's a difficult conversation, one we hope not to have.

After it had been resolved it got me thinking about how we converse on these types of topics, and how, as breeders, we handle those awkward conversations. My thoughts turned to scribbles and I wrote a blog on it, in the hope that it helps another breeder navigate what can be a very tricky situation that at some stage happens to us all.....

Maybe it's a dog breeder telling a potential owner that they are not the right fit for a particular puppy. Maybe it's explaining the loss of a puppy.
