Margo
The chances are quite real, especially since Margo is only 2 years old.
In Border Terriers, prolonged shaving often results in softening of the topcoat, loss of intense color, and excessive undercoat growth. However, the hair follicles usually continue to produce the topcoat – the problem is that regular shearing prevents it from maturing properly and being removed naturally.
What influences the success of returning to hand stripping?
A dog's age – 2 years – is a big plus. Young dogs have a much greater potential for coat regeneration.
Genetics – if Margo previously had healthy, hard coats, the prognosis is better.
Shaving time – 2 years is quite a long time, but it's not a hopeless case.
Regular follow-up treatments – it's best to use the rolling coat method or perform more frequent, partial stripping.

Today I had the pleasure of grooming the lovely Margo ❤️, a 2-year-old Border Terrier girl.
Unfortunately, her owners had been led to believe that she was receiving hand stripping, while in reality her coat had been clipped with a machine for a long period of time. As a result, her harsh outer coat lost the texture and qualities that are characteristic of the breed.
I decided to take on the challenge and perform her first hand-stripping session. Margo was an absolute star throughout the entire appointment—calm, patient, and wonderfully well-behaved 🥰.
Will her coat return to its original condition? I can't promise that. After two years of clipping, the damage can be difficult to reverse. However, Margo is only 2 years old, so it's definitely worth trying to restore the proper coat texture and give her coat the chance to recover.
This is also a reminder of how important it is to choose the correct grooming method for each breed. For Border Terriers, hand stripping is not just about appearance—it's an essential part of maintaining a healthy, breed-appropriate coat.
