Yesterday, Kirsty was at Selside & Grayrigg Show, where she had the prestigious job of judging the scarecrow competition with this yearโ€™s theme being veterinary! ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿฉบ

There were some brilliant entries, but funnily enough, this one caught her eye and was a firm winner! ๐Ÿ†

We thoroughly value being invited along to support local shows like Selside & Grayrigg. They are an important part of the rural communities we work within, and itโ€™s always good to get out, catch up with familiar faces and support the people and events that keep those communities going.

Thank you to the committee for the invitation and for putting on such a great day, it was a pleasure to be part of it! Selside & Grayrigg Show

This monthโ€™s Calf of the Month is a great example of why regular growth monitoring matters.

At birth, this heifer calf was so small she didnโ€™t register on the weigh tape. As part of our Calf Health service, her growth has been monitored regularly, allowing us to track her progress and make sure she was achieving a good growth rate.

Despite her very small start, she has maintained good growth throughout the pre-weaning period, with no episodes of illness, and has now reached weaning size.

Regular weighing and growth-rate measurements help us identify calves that may be falling behind, assess whether nutrition and management are working, and make changes where needed.

For this calf, the figures have shown exactly what we wanted to see โ€“ consistent growth from birth through to weaning. ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ“ˆ

Our Calf Health service uses regular monitoring alongside practical veterinary input to help you understand how your calves are performing and identify areas where improvements could be made.

Sale season is well underway, with tups, breeding sheep and store lambs moving between farms.

Whether youโ€™re bringing home a couple of tups or hundreds of store lambs, good new arrival procedures are key to protecting your existing flock and with Bluetongue (BTV-3) also a consideration this year, itโ€™s more important than ever to know what youโ€™re buying and where it has come from.

A few reminders:

โœ… Donโ€™t forget the Animal Health & Welfare Pathway
Eligible farmers can access funded veterinary reviews for up to three separate flocks, providing a useful opportunity to look at flock health, disease prevention and priorities with your vet.

If you are buying sheep this autumn, make sure your quarantine plan is ready before they arrive. If you are unsure whatโ€™s right for your flock, speak to one of the Yan team.

With BTV-3 continuing to affect sheep and cattle across the UK, experiences from farms dealing with the disease are highlighting some practical things to keep in mind.

โ˜‘๏ธ Check stock closely and regularly. Signs can include reluctance to get up or walk, loss of appetite, lameness, drooling, swelling around the face and muzzle, nasal discharge and raised temperatures.

โ˜‘๏ธSupport affected stock. Animals may be reluctant to eat or drink and can deteriorate quickly. Easy access to water, palatable feed and supportive care can be important. We currently have hydration sachets available from the practice for those who may need them.

โ˜‘๏ธVaccination is still worth discussing. Vaccine availability remains challenging due to huge demand nationally, but we are continuing to work with our partners across XLVets to try and secure stock as it becomes available.

Trace element deficiencies are common in lambs, and levels can vary significantly from year to year depending on grazing conditions. Deficiencies are most commonly seen after weaning and into late summer/autumn, making this the ideal time to test before clinical signs or reduced growth become apparent.

To assess the group, we recommend blood sampling six representative lambs. Samples are tested for:
๐Ÿ”ตCobalt (Vitamin B12)
๐Ÿ”ตSelenium
๐Ÿ”ตCopper

As part of our Membership Schemes, we routine trace element blood test fees are included, making it easier to monitor lamb health and our clients can see the benefits of identifying deficiencies early and maintaining lamb performance and growth..

With grass supplies and grazing conditions varying considerably across the region this year, it's particularly important not to assume trace element status. Testing can help ensure your lambs have everything they need to achieve their full growth potential.

If you would like to arrange blood sampling or discuss whether trace element testing would benefit your flock, speak to one of the Yan team.

๐‘พ๐’†'๐’“๐’† ๐‘ฏ๐’Š๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ!

Yan Farm Health is an independent, growing practice and a proud member of XL Vets, working with progressive commercial farmers across South Cumbria, North Yorkshire and North Lancashire.

We are looking for the right candidate, not the right level of qualification, though we feel the role would be best suited to a vet 1โ€“5 years qualified.

Our vets work closely with a smaller number of farms, providing exceptional service and building long-term relationships. We are proud to be engaged with our local community and to offer a supportive, positive place to work.

What we offer:
โ–ช๏ธ4-day working week with a good work-life balance supported by a close-knit team
โ–ช๏ธProgressive, engaged and open minded client base
โ–ช๏ธCompetitive package with CPD tailored to your interests

Based between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, this role offers both professional development and an excellent lifestyle.

Interested candidates should send a CV to [email protected] or call Andrew, Kirsty or Jasmine for an informal chat.
