Fearful dogs and fear based reactivity
I've been trying to think of a way to describe this from the perspective of a human instead of the dog because I feel, as humans, we just don't get it. We think of dogs being social animals, which they are, but like humans they too have likes and dislikes. A lot of people are scared of spiders so I'm going to use them as an example. You're in your house minding your own business, nice and relaxed when something catches your attention. A big spider! Most people with a fear of spiders will not actively go near them. Instead they keep an eye on them from a distance. Now what is worse than a spider just chilling on your wall or your floor? Oh yeah a spider running in your direction! The panic to get out the way, to get away from it, it's not going to do anything to you but it's the fear that drives your reaction. Or one that's completely disappeared from view, the panic of "where did it go?". Now, let's turn this into dogs who are fearful of other dogs. Those other dogs are our spiders. Your dog running past or over to these dogs is the same as the spider running across your floor. The "it's ok he/she's friendly" means absolutely nothing, just like me telling you the spider isn't going to hurt you. The reaction of you trying to get away from the spider is the same reaction you see from reactive dogs, it triggers fight or flight. Putting your dogs on lead minimises the chance of this reaction. It ensures you are in control of your dog and helps to make the other dog feel SAFE. Even if your dog is neutral and will not run over to the other dog, it still triggers the same response of "where is that dog? Where is it going to go? Is it coming towards me? Is it going to run?" Putting them on a lead eliminates all of the above for the other owner and means the dogs can pass each other in a much more relaxed manner. Yes there might still be a reaction from the reactive dog but it give everyone peace of mind that all dogs are SAFE. Which spider would you prefer, the one running around or the one secure in a container?
