**From puppy pupil to full-blown teenager!** 💛

I recently had the absolute pleasure of seeing gorgeous Rosie and her family again. The last time I saw Rosie, she was attending our puppy classes. She’s now around 18 months old - and adolescence has well and truly arrived!

Rosie is a wonderfully friendly, good-natured social butterfly. She wants to explore, sniff, play and join every party she can find. Unfortunately, her humans have accidentally found themselves cast as the fun police - appearing whenever it’s time to put the lead back on or bring an adventure to an end!

Adolescent dogs may look grown-up, but their brains are still developing. Add hormones, growing confidence, breed-specific traits and a strong desire for adventure, and skills that once seemed solid can suddenly become rather… optional. 😂

Our session wasn’t about demanding more “obedience”. It was about showing Rosie that her humans can be part of the fun too.

We explored:

🐾 Using a long line to prevent unwanted habits being rehearsed
🐾 Making recall rewarding - without always ending the adventure
🐾 Bringing tuggy games and sniffing into walks
🐾 Creating little “islands” where dog and human enjoy activities together
🐾 Helping Rosie feel comfortable when her lead is clipped on
🐾 Reinforcing four paws on the floor without accidentally rewarding jumping

Rosie absolutely came alive when the fluffy tug toys appeared! A little chasing, capturing and tugging gave her a wonderful outlet - and showed us exactly how we can make engagement with her humans genuinely rewarding.

Because recall doesn’t have to mean marching formally back to someone’s side. Anything that brings your dog happily back into your space is a recall.

And walks don’t have to be humans at one end of the lead and dogs at the other. They can be shared adventures, filled with games, sniffing, connection and fun.

Rosie isn’t giving her family a hard time. She’s an enthusiastic teenager who is currently finding the world enormously exciting. With thoughtful management and a little imagination, her humans can stop being the fun police - and start joining the party. 💛

**Sometimes, the best way forward is to do a little less… beautifully.** 💜

Meet the utterly gorgeous Violet!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Violet and her lovely new family for a private training session. This beautiful young Spaniel-type girl has only recently arrived in her new home - and, while she has very clearly landed on her paws, she has an enormous amount of change to process.

Our session wasn’t about filling Violet’s head with commands. It was about helping her family understand the busy little brain behind that beautiful face.

We explored:

🐾 How thoughtful lead handling can reduce frustration
🐾 Why the lead should act as a seatbelt - not a steering wheel
🐾 Giving Violet time to sniff, watch and gather information
🐾 Recognising her “traffic lights” before excitement spills over
🐾 Why short, successful experiences can be more valuable than trying to do too much too soon

As a young working-breed girl, Violet certainly doesn’t need any help becoming more excited by the world! Our job is to help her slow down, process what she sees and learn that she doesn’t need to chase every pigeon or rush towards every interesting thing.

And that nose! Violet makes the most wonderful little sniffing noises and absolutely LOVES investigating. I have a feeling scent work could become the perfect outlet for her clever working-dog brain once she has had time to settle.

Violet is happy, social, inquisitive and full of potential. She doesn’t need to experience everything at once - she needs time, choice and thoughtful guidance from the humans who already adore her.

Sometimes, progress begins not by asking for more, but by slowing down enough to notice what our dogs are telling us. 💜

🐾 **Meet Koji - Master Explorer!** 👃💙

Some dogs wander into our **Scent, Search & Exploration Room** and think...

"Ooooh, what's this?"

Koji walked in with considerably more professional intentions. 😂

Koji is no stranger to sniffing. In fact, when it comes to using his nose, we'd probably put him firmly in the **pro category**.

And that made watching him explore the room absolutely fascinating.

He was methodical.

He searched.

He investigated.

He doubled back.

He checked high, checked low and made VERY sure that no potentially treat-containing corner had escaped his attention. 😂

And that's another thing we've loved discovering while testing the room.

It doesn't really matter whether your dog has never played a scent game in their life or is already an accomplished little search machine.

**The room meets them where they are.**

For beginners, simply exploring a new environment and discovering that using their nose makes good things happen can be an adventure in itself.

For dogs like Koji? We can make those searches a little more interesting. A little less obvious. A little more challenging...

Because apparently hiding food from a professional requires us to up our game too. 😂

Our Scent, Search & Exploration Room opens for private bookings in early October - ready for dogs of all sniffing abilities to explore it their own way. 🍂🐾

👀 **Something new is coming to The Keighley Canine Collective…**

Actually… make that **TWO** new things. 😁🐾

One involves plenty of **sniffing, searching and exploring** 👃🐾

The other is going to involve rather more **splashing**… 💦😂

Both have been created with the same idea in mind:

❤️ More ways to have fun with your dog
🧠 More opportunities to use their brain and body
🌧️ And, perhaps most importantly after *this* year… **activities that don't depend on the Great British weather behaving itself!**

Our **Scent, Search & Exploration Room** will be opening for private bookings this October, just in time for those darker, colder, wetter days.

And then there's that little word on the poster…

🐾 Two dogs. Same room. Very different ideas about what makes a good time… 😂💙

Jess & Duke were another of our wonderful testing teams in the new Scent, Search & Exploration Room - and they rather beautifully demonstrated exactly what we hoped this space would be about.

Duke?

👃 **SEARCHING!**

There were treats to be found and he had important work to do. 😂

Jess, on the other hand, discovered the toys...

🧸 **Now THIS is more like it!**

And that's one of the things we've loved most about watching different dogs use the room.

There isn't a 'right' way to enjoy it.

Some dogs want to sniff every inch of the scent walls.
Some love solving the little searches and puzzles.
Some investigate the different equipment and surfaces.

And some would apparently just like you to point them towards the toy department. 😂

The room is about giving dogs **choice** - time and space to sniff, search, play, explore and discover what *they* enjoy, without pressure or a list of things they're expected to achieve.

And for their humans?

You get to slow down, step back and enjoy watching them. 💙

After lots of testing, tweaking and invaluable feedback from our first canine visitors, we're almost ready...

🐾 **And just like that… another Saturday of classes comes to an end!** 🐾

Our current Saturday courses finished this weekend, and I’m going to miss this lovely bunch. 💛

There’s something really special about spending a few weeks getting to know a group of dogs and their people.

Watching the dogs become more comfortable.

Watching their humans get to know them that little bit better.

Seeing confidence grow, skills develop, lightbulb moments happen… and, of course, enjoying plenty of laughs and the occasional bit of dog-shaped chaos along the way. 😂🐶

I’ve had an absolutely lovely set of people and dogs in these classes, and it’s been a genuine pleasure spending my Saturdays with you all.

The good news is that it’s not quite goodbye to everyone…

A few familiar faces have already booked themselves onto new adventures and exciting things to try, so I’ll be seeing them again very soon. 🥰

Because dog training doesn’t have to be something we only do when there’s a problem to fix.

It can simply be something brilliant that we do together.

Thank you to every single person who came along, practised, laughed, learned and celebrated their dog for exactly who they are.

You’ve been a fabulous bunch.

**Big muscles. Big feelings. And sometimes, a very busy brain.** 💛

Meet the gorgeous Archie!

Archie is a big, strong bull-breed mix who recently joined his new family. At home, he’s a wonderfully chilled-out lad. But step outside and his whole demeanour changes - he becomes hyper-alert, scans his surroundings and pulls with considerable strength.

Bull breeds can be incredibly powerful and determined dogs. They can also be sensitive to pressure, quick to become frustrated and capable of travelling from 0–100 in a split second.

That combination doesn’t need us to become stronger, firmer or more controlling. It asks us to slow down, look beneath the behaviour and work out what the dog needs from us.

Sometimes, that means asking:

🐾 Is this dog physically comfortable?
🐾 Do they feel safe?
🐾 Have they learned how to navigate the world on a lead?
🐾 Are they already overwhelmed before the reaction happens?
🐾 What are they trying to communicate?

Today wasn’t about teaching Archie lots of new cues. It was about listening, observing and gathering the full picture.

And underneath all that muscle, Archie showed us just how responsive he is. With quiet body movements - no pulling, repeated instructions or battle of strength - he simply followed.

When you share your life with a powerful dog, using your brain rather than your brawn isn’t only kinder - it’s far more effective.

Archie doesn’t need more pressure or a long list of obedience cues. He needs help learning how to navigate life as a family dog, one manageable step at a time.

Sometimes the most valuable training session is the one where we slow down and make sure the foundations are solid before trying to build anything on top. 💛

🐾 **What a lovely way to finish our Scent Games course.** 🐾

This week we wrapped up four weeks of sniffing, searching, tracking, trailing and, most importantly... having fun together.

For our final class, we explored some simple scent games that are easy to recreate at home or out on walks. You don't need fancy equipment or a huge garden to enjoy scent work - just a little imagination and a dog with a nose (which, thankfully, they all come with! 😉).

The best part? The learning didn't stop when everyone went home.

I've already received a fantastic video from one of our teams, who has built their very own scent wall in the garden! How cool is that?! 🤩 Seeing people take ideas from class and make them their own is exactly what these courses are all about.

It was also lovely to hear that several teams have been practising the Mantrailing skills we introduced and are thinking about joining us on the trails soon. I can't wait to see where those adventures lead.

My hope with Scent Games has always been simple: to show people that scent work isn't just a sport - it's a wonderful way to spend time with your dog. Whether you fall in love with Scent Detection, Tracking or Mantrailing, or simply hide treats around the house and turn your walks into little sniffing adventures, you're giving your dog the chance to do something they were born to do.

When it comes to scent work, we're only limited by our own imagination... and I think this group proved that beautifully. 💚

Thank you to every team for making the last four weeks such a pleasure. You were an absolute joy to work with.

And a special mention to our missing teammate this week... you were very much missed, and we hope to see you and your wonderful dog again soon. 🐶💚

**🐑 From "What on earth is this?"... to "I've got this!" 💙**

Our Herding Game course came to an end this week, and what a joy it's been to watch these teams grow together.

There have been moments of brilliance...

Moments of confusion...

Moments of absolute chaos (because let's be honest... herding breeds don't always read the lesson plan! 😂).

But every single one of those moments has been part of the learning.

Over the last few weeks we've explored everything from setting the environment up for success and developing handler skills, through to creating movement, managing those inevitable "wrong" choices, working through sticky moments, introducing verbal cues, adding distance and speed, and finally bringing in stop and direction-change cues.

What I've loved most, though, isn't any individual exercise.

It's watching the partnership develop.

Seeing the dogs begin to understand the game, watching the handlers become clearer in their communication, and seeing both ends of the lead grow in confidence together.

Because that's what this has always been about.

Not creating perfect dogs.

But building a team that enjoys working together while giving these incredible dogs an outlet for the instincts they've been bred for.

A huge thank you to both teams for trusting the process, embracing the wins, laughing through the wobbles, and making the Herding Game course such a pleasure to teach.

I really hope I'll see you all again soon. ❤️🐾
