When your beloved pet is hospitalised, we know it can feel overwhelming.

Please know that from the moment they arrive here at Christchurch Veterinary Referrals, your pet is treated with the same care, compassion and kindness we would want for our own animals.

Our team understands that they aren’t “just a cat/dog” — they’re a cherished member of your family. We take the time to get to know them, comfort them when they’re worried, celebrate the little victories and provide the very best care we can, every step of the way.

While you may not be able to be beside them every moment, they are never without someone in their corner.

Trusting us with your pet is a privilege we never take for granted. We’re here for them — and for you — through every step of their journey.

Pets in Practice

This adorable little lady is Juno, the 3 year old Domestic Shorthair, who was referred to us in June after an accident with a car left her with both a pelvic and tail injury. Unfortunately for Juno, her tail did require amputation at her local vets before she was referred to us.

Surgeon Jacek performed imaging which revealed a sacroiliac luxation which required a 2.7mm sacroiliac lag screw to hold everything in place. Urination was monitored closely with little Juno, due to the risk of tail pull injury following her accident, and before she was due to go home, surprised the nursing team by voluntarily urinating in her litter tray!

Beautiful Juno has since been back for us for a recheck and we are pleased to inform that her owners had no concerns and that she has made fantastic progress during her recovery period!

Well done, sweet girl.

Tiny paws, big heart

Meet Willow, a very special cat who donated some blood to help another cat in need!

When a patient urgently needed a blood transfusion, Olivia’s cat Willow stepped up to help save a life. We’re incredibly proud of this little hero and so grateful to Olivia and Willow for making such a difference.

It’s a wonderful reminder that sometimes, our smallest patients can make the biggest impact.

Thank you, Willow, for being such a star!

Pets in Practice

Meet Treacle, the 5 year old cross breed who was referred to us following a traumatic incident left her with a luxation of the left hip five weeks prior.

A left total hip replacement was undertaken using a Movora 20mm BFX cup, a +5 13mm head and a number 5 stem with a 14mm small lateral bolt. Surgery went well and little Treacle stayed with us for a two week hospitalisation period before being sent home on strict rest to continue her recovery at home.

RSPCA Walk to Remember

In memory of Pedro, his devoted owners wanted to do something meaningful to honour his life, while also thanking our team for the care and support we provided all those years ago. We suggested that, rather than receiving a gift, a donation could be made to an animal charity to help other pets in need.

Pedro’s owners have since chosen to take part in Walk to Remember, a flexible fundraising event where individuals, families and communities come together to walk in memory of a beloved pet on National Pet Memorial Day, 13 September.

Pedro was a much-loved and happy little companion, and we are honoured that his memory is being celebrated in such a thoughtful way.

If you would like to make a donation in memory of Pedro, you can do so using the link below. Every contribution, however big or small, will help support animals in need.

Pets in Practice

This beautiful little girl is Ruby, a 5 month old German Shepherd, who was referred to us with a right tibial fracture.

Surgeon Aleks performed intraoperative radiography which confirmed a long oblique fracture of the distal right tibia with an intact fibula. He then placed a 3.5 Standard Evolox plate with two cerclage wires, and two 3.5 cortical screws placed. The post-operative radiographs confirmed good fracture reduction with
satisfactory fragment apposition, excellent implant positioning, and appropriate limb alignment.

Beautiful Ruby was hospitalised overnight for any additional pain relief and monitoring before being discharged to continue her recovery from home.

What a gorgeous little lady.

Tomorrow is International Cat Day!

We're looking forward to celebrating our feline friends and raising awareness of the importance of understanding their unique health and welfare needs.

As an ISFM Silver Cat Friendly Clinic, we're committed to providing a calm, feline-friendly environment where cats can receive the specialist care they need with as little stress as possible. Working alongside primary care veterinary practices, our referral teams are proud to support cats with complex medical and surgical conditions.

This year's International Cat Day, led by iCatCare, is a great opportunity to celebrate the special place cats hold in our lives and to recognise the small things we can all do to support their health and wellbeing.

Tag us in a photo of your feline companions so we can celebrate them together, and we'll share our favourites in our story tomorrow!

Meet the team Monday

After spending 5 years as a ward assistant within the company, Megan made the move to her new role as a Veterinary Nurse after passing written and practical exams and joining the register as an RVN. At home Megan has a hand reared cat called Fozzie and two cheeky cocker spaniels called Milo and Remi. Outside of work a lot of Megan’s time is taken up watching her partner whilst he’s taking part in motocross races.
