This lovely little Cavapoo can find being on a walk a little overwhelming. She can get overstimulated, she wants to jump up at people and bark at dogs.
We arranged to meet at Needham Lakes for her 3rd lesson because it’s somewhere her family like to take her. When I arrived I was worried we had set her up to fail, it was so busy because there was an event on.
But by taking our time and putting into practice all the elements we had learnt in previous lessons she coped so well.
Watching dogs walk past and being able to focus with so much going on around her.
Her guardian even commented on how much she was wagging her tail and how much happier she seems now in general.

Most people probably look to take the day off on their birthday but not me!

How does your dog cope with guests?
I’ve had two dogs this week who struggle when guests visit their home.
This beautiful spaniel loves guests, so much so he jumps all over them and has no perception of personal space! His guardian finds having people round stressful because he just can’t seem to relax and settle.
Today we introduced a marker word, a snuffle mat, a settle mat and when we felt he was ready a kong.
Today for the first time with a visiting guest (me!) he settled.
No force, no fear, just calm force, fear free training and rewarding all the good decisions he made!

I broke the Spaniel 😝
This fabulous fella had his 3rd lesson for loose lead walking yesterday - his guardians have invested in a two point harness and lead and can already see the benefits.
This dog gives the most amazing puppy dog eyes when he leans in for a cuddle.

Does your dog see a value in checking in?
This fabulous girl had her 3rd lesson today and we went on a training walk. She is about 5 years old and moved into her new forever home a few weeks ago.
We have been working on her loose lead walking and her new guardians would like to work towards letting her have off lead walks.
Her lead walking has really improved and we worked on her engagement and focus in the lesson.

I know people can worry about rehoming a rescue dog but with the right support from a reputable rescue you can get cracking dogs like this one. She is so sweet and found the most amazing home.
Spaniel Aid are always looking for foster homes and as a foster you have the first opportunity to rehome or you can support the dog as a new forever home is found.

I’m back from a wonderful city break in Edinburgh.
The weather was fabulous - slightly cooler than in Ipswich and we avoided the Suffolk Show traffic!
We took advantage of the sunshine and visited The Royal Botanical Garden.
Messages will be responded to tomorrow.
It’s also looking to be a bit cooler next week which I’m sure your dog will appreciate it.

It’s half term and I’m going to take a few days off work!
Calls and messages will be responded to next Saturday.

A polite reminder to everyone it’s the Suffolk Show on Wednesday and Thursday.
If you are attending have fun.
Please consider leaving your dog at home (especially if it’s going to be hot 🥵). Arrange for a dog walker to pop in instead to give them a comfort break.

Needless to say lessons and classes have been postponed and cancelled this weekend but earlier in the week when it was a ‘normal’ temperature this fella had his second 1:1 lesson.
We are working on his focus around distractions.
For me the ability to listen and focus when there are distractions going on around you is essential training and creates the foundations for other life skills.
