Christchurch Veterinary Surgery

Christchurch Veterinary Surgery A friendly, well equipped practice offering excellent care for your pets. Christchurch Veterinary Surgery was opened in 2001, by Shane and Charlotte Morrison.

In 2011 we opened a new building at Tuddenham Road business centre, where our referral department (which deals with complex surgeries) was moved to. All of our vets are very experienced. We are an independent, family run business, who strive to deliver the best service for your pets, with a personal touch.

Today is National Best Friends Day, a moment to honour the special, life‑enriching relationships we share with our closest companions.

Dogs have been man’s best friend for thousands of years, forming bonds with us that are truly inseparable.

RVN Emma’s little boy, Buddy, shares that same unbreakable bond with his Fox Red friend, Watson — two best friends who prove just how special these connections are. 🧡

Grass seeds are small but can cause big problems for our furry friends.

These tiny, barbed darts are designed to travel in one direction, meaning they can easily work their way into the skin, ears, nose, paws, or even further—often leading to painful infections.

Here are some simple ways to protect your pet:
🐾 Check paws carefully – Inspect between toes and around pads after every walk

🐾 Look at ears – Grass seeds can easily get trapped inside; consider a dog snood for extra protection

🐾 Brush their coat – Especially under the belly and around the legs where seeds cling most

🐾 Avoid long grass – Stick to well-maintained paths where possible

💡 If you notice limping, swelling, excessive licking, or head shaking, get in touch promptly!

Puppy alert! 🐶✨
Charlie, Naomi and Brook got to cuddle three stunning Vizsla pups, and we’re all a little bit in love. ❤️

In a lovely gesture, the owner named one of the pups after Vet Bernardo, who had performed the ultrasound scan on mum, Bunny.

A special moment for the whole team! ✨

☀️ Keeping Our Pets Cool in Hot Weather ☀️
As temperatures rise, it’s important we help our furry (and feathered!) friends stay safe and comfortable.

Here are some simple but essential ways to protect them from the heat:

🐾 Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler to prevent heat stroke

❄️ Provide cooling mats so your pet has a chilled place to rest during hot weather

🧴 Use pet‑safe sunscreen on exposed areas like the nose and ear tips — especially on white or light‑coloured animals who are more prone to sunburn

💧 Keep plenty of fresh drinking water available at all times — add ice cubes to keep it cool. Frozen treats like stuffed Kongs are another great way to help pets stay comfortable

🌿 Make sure outdoor pets (rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, etc.) have lots of shade and safe hiding spots to escape the heat

Yesterday was World Bee Day, and we’re shining a light on how you can support these vital insects! 🐝

Bees are facing real challenges—over a third of species are threatened with extinction, and many are now listed as “under concern” by the IUCN. These tiny pollinators play a huge role in our ecosystems, so every small action helps.

Here at Christchurch, our garden is buzzing with pollinator‑friendly plants like Wallflower (Erysimum cheiri), Green Alkanet (Pentaglottis sempervirens), and White Comfrey (Symphytum orientale). 🌿

Ways you can help:

🐝 Plant pollinator‑friendly flowers

🐝 Build a bee hotel for resting and nesting

🐝 Leave a patch of lawn unmowed to create natural habitat green
