Dunnydeer Veterinary Group Personal care and advice for Farm Animals, Horses and Family Pets in Insch and surrounding areas.

We are a first opinion practice with 5 full time vets who share the on-call rota and 1 part-time vet. All of our vets cover all species, although some do have specific areas of expertise. We also have 3 nurses who provide a first class service for our clients and their pets as well as a nursing assistant. Our dedicated team strive to treat all pets with empathy and cater for their individual needs. We are well equipped to deal with most cases and we have good support from specialists to whom we can refer complex cases. Our ambulatory farm animal and equine service is well established, we cover approximately 900 square miles of Aberdeenshire, although most of our clients are within 12 miles of our surgery. We run our own out-of-hours 24 hour service and can attend to most emergencies within an hour. We feel preventative medicine is of utmost importance and we like to be pro-active in this area. We have an experienced team who continually endeavour to develop their skills and understand that it is important to keep up to date with emerging diseases and control policies.

🎃🩸🐴⭐️FREE EQUINE CUSHING’S TEST MONTH⭐️🐴🩸🎃

As we are now in autumn (and fast approaching winter!) so it’s time to think about Cushing’s testing; and in October, it’s free*!

Although Cushing’s tends to affect older horses (late teens into twenties), we can see it in horses as young as 10 years old.

Some of the signs to look out for are:
⭐️Laminitis
⭐️Lethargy
⭐️Muscle wastage, especially the topline
⭐️Abnormal sweating
⭐️Fat deposits
⭐️Increased thirst and urination
⭐️And of course; a curly coat. This is one of the last things to be affected, so the absence of the curly coat doesn’t mean your horse doesn’t have Cushing’s!

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, or just think your horse seems ‘older’ this year, it may be worth a check.

🩸💉The blood test is free* until October 31st for horses not already diagnosed with Cushing’s and not on treatment. If your horse is due a vaccine or any routine work like a dental in October, it’s a great idea to tie in the blood sample with this.

🪱💩 You could also consider a blood sample for encysted red worm/tapeworm to save on multiple visits and sampling!

We have unfortunately had a deceased entire male grey cat handed in to us. He doesn’t have any markings but does have a rather raggedy right ear. He was found at the Pitcaple junction this morning.

Sadly we had a large cat handed in last night that died after being hit by a car in the Wardhouse area. He was a large young entire male cat, white and tabby. He wasn’t microchipped. Please contact us if you think he may have been your cat.

💧🐾 Blue-Green Algae Warning 🐾💧

As we continue to have some warmer weather, please be aware of blue-green algae in lakes, ponds, and slow-moving water. It can be highly toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. They can be affected by drinking the water directly, or by grooming their coats after swimming in it.

🚫 Keep pets away from water that looks green, blue-green, or has a scummy surface.

⚠️ Signs of poisoning include vomiting, weakness, difficulty breathing, seizures, and collapse.

If you think your pet has been exposed, contact us immediately on 01464 820235 for advice. Quick action can save lives.

Worm Club for our sheep farmers - NEW for summer 2026 ! 🐑🪱

Keep lambs thriving this summer and stay ahead of the parasite curve by doing regular faecal egg count testing and joining our Worm Club.

Submit a monthly, pooled sample (5-10 faecal samples from each group of lambs) in July, August and September to join in. There’s no other joining fee or sign-up form needed.

Members will get a monthly report on what worm burdens we are finding across Aberdeenshire farms, including both one off tests and monitoring treatments in the local area.

Submit your first summer monitoring samples before the 30th of July and you will also receive an email invitation to our exclusive online training event at no additional charge.

Bluetongue restrictions now in place!🦟🦟🦟

We have now entered the ‘high risk’ period for Bluetongue transmission and as Scotland remains free of the disease movement restrictions now apply and will remain in place until at least 9th September.
Almost all cattle and sheep movements into Scotland from any other part of the UK will now require either a pre-movement negative test or, for cattle only, to be fully vaccinated at least 21 days previously with the Bovalto-3 vaccine.

Remember these controls only reduce risk and do not eliminate the risk completely. As ever we would ask all our farmers to consider whether importing animals during the coming months is absolutely essential, or could the movement be delayed until cooler weather arrives.
