The word “worms” can make any pet owner shudder! But did you know that ringworm isn't actually a worm at all?

🦠 Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin that can affect cats, dogs and even people.

🐾 How does ringworm spread?

Ringworm can be passed through direct contact with an infected animal. Infected animals can also shed fungal spores into the environment, where they can survive for long periods. This means your pet could potentially pick it up anywhere an infected animal has been.

🔍 What should you look out for?

Signs can include:
• Small, round bald patches
• Scaly or flaky skin
• Small spots or changes to the skin
• Scratching or nibbling at the affected area

Not every pet will show obvious signs, so regularly checking your pet's skin and coat is a good habit.

❤️ Don't panic!

Ringworm is usually straightforward to diagnose and treat.

We can use a special light to help detect the fungus, and depending on what we find, we may take a hair sample or a small amount of affected skin for further testing.

If you notice a bald patch, scaly area or anything unusual on your pet's skin, give us a call and let us take a look.

And remember… ringworm might have “worm” in its name, but there isn't a wriggly worm involved! 🐛❌

We have had a large black neutered male cat brought into us from Upper Lambourn. He is very unwell and does not have a microchip, so we have been unable to find his owner. If you think he may be your cat, please get in touch as soon as possible on 01488 683999.

🍂 Golden Autumn: Recognise & Take Action 🍂

Autumn brings beautiful colours, crisp walks and plenty for our pets to explore but there are also a few seasonal hazards to be aware of.

🐾 Harvest mites
Orange or red flecks on your pet’s skin could be harvest mites, which can cause irritation and itching. If you’re concerned, give us a call for advice.

🐝 Sleepy wasps
Rotting fruit can attract sleepy wasps and inquisitive pets may try to snap at them. Stings can cause painful swelling, and in some cases more serious reactions. If your pet develops significant swelling or has any difficulty breathing, contact us immediately.

🌳 Mushrooms & toadstools
Keep your pet away from wild mushrooms and toadstools. It can be difficult to tell which are safe and some can be highly toxic.

🌰 Conkers & acorns
They may look like autumn treasures but both can be harmful if eaten by dogs.

🍁 Fallen leaves
Damp, rotting leaves can contain mould spores and bacteria that may cause problems if swallowed.

🌙 Be seen on darker walks
As the evenings get darker, make sure both you and your dog can be clearly seen. Reflective harnesses, flashing collars and reflective clothing can all help.

🍂 Enjoy the season, but keep a watchful eye on what your pet is sniffing, chewing and eating!

🐾 Meet The Team- say hello to Maria! 🐾

I'm sure Maria is someone many of our long standing clients will recognise. Maria has had a 40 year career in the veterinary industry, 30 of those years have been here with us at Hungerford Vets. Her roles have included Veterinary Nursing, administration and reception.

When Maria is not assisting patients and clients at work, she has a passion for dog grooming and is also part of a local choir.

Maria says she loves to travel, she has been as far north as Iceland and west to Arizona and the Grand Canyon but ultimately one day, she would love to visit New Zealand.

As a practice we would just like to thank Maria for her dedication and say how much we value her commitment, experience and knowledge!!

Dusty (top) pictured here with his family pack, Lara and Ghost has turned 15 today.

Dusty was diagnosed with Addison's disease many years ago, with careful management, he is now one of our eldest canine patients and he still looks fantastic.

His wonderful owner has said, "Thanks to all at Hungerford who have supported him all these years!"

What is Addison's disease?

Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is a condition that develops when the adrenal glands stop producing two steroid hormones called cortisol and aldosterone.

Cortisol and aldosterone are essential for life, and without them, the body starts to fail. In most cases, Addison’s is caused when the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks the adrenal glands, which prevents them from working properly (this type of condition is called an ‘autoimmune’ or ‘immune mediated’ condition).

If your vet suspects your dog has Addison’s, it’s likely that they will need to run some tests to confirm, these are likely to include blood tests, urine tests, and possibly an ECG and an ultrasound scan. If your dog is diagnosed, they will need medication for the rest of their life, including:

A monthly injection given by your vet (to replace aldosterone)
Daily steroid tablets, given at home (to replace cortisol)
