Confirmation from Kirklees re finding a lost dog. Dogs can still be taken to a vet in Kirklees - including Donaldson’s and they will be collected from there as they have previously.

Found a stray dog? Here's what to do.

We've received a number of enquiries recently about stray dogs, so we'd like to reassure residents that arrangements remain in place to make sure lost and stray dogs in Kirklees can be cared for safely while efforts are made to reunite them with their owners.

If you find a stray dog, please contact Kirklees Stray Dog Services on 01484 502216.

The team will advise on the most appropriate next steps, including the nearest available location where the dog can be taken to receive care and support while its owner is traced.

We know how important animal welfare is to people across Kirklees, and many stray dogs are in fact much-loved family pets that have become separated from their owners. If you're unsure what to do, the Kirklees Stray Dog Services is there to help.

There has been no change in our policy and there continues to be 24/7 provision in place across Kirklees to look after stray dogs.

If you find a stray dog between 10pm and 8am, we recommend contacting your nearest 24-hour veterinary practice before travelling to check whether they are able to accept stray dogs.

Dogs can be taken to any veterinary practice in Kirklees that is willing to accept them, including Donaldsons Vets, and will be collected by the Stray Dog Service from 8am the following day, as normal.

UPDATE ‼️. I have spoken to the council. The dog warden services are now contracted out to Cliffe Kennels and they are not aware of this decision. The lady I spoke to is going to refer it to the Manager for their attention.

I asked that they maybe clarify the situation on their page as there seems to be a lot of confusion.

I have emailed the council and if I receive a response I will add it to this thread.

This is a really disappointing decision made by Kirklees Council. Be aware if your dog is lost it will be taken to Cliffe Kennels which isn’t nice and my dog contracted kennel cough there when he got lost. It’s not exactly local either and really expensive to get your dog back.

Please make sure your dog is chipped with the details up to date and also put a tag on them. All dogs in my care wear one of mine.

We don’t just do dogs 😆. This little fella landed on my neighbour last night. I did everything you are supposed to do……this morning at 7am he was gone. At 9am he flew straight at me and landed on my arm and that was that.

Sadly Meltham Wildlife Rescue is currently closed but I found him a place in Bury to be looked after until he is ready to do grown up bird things. 🐦 ♥️
