Scent training: should you opt for one-to-one sessions or group classes?

Both have their advantages … whether it's the first time you've tried scent, you're an operational team, or you've been having fun with it for years!

One-to-one sessions are fab way to ensure the session will be all about you and your dog and your specific aims and goals, and can tackle any questions you might have directly. The session can be adjusted to secure a certain environment for the session that best suits your dog and your goals. It’s also a great option for dogs (or people!) who might not be comfortable or confident in a group.

Group sessions are fab for being around like-minded people for support and encouragement (and entertainment🤣), and can be a really great atmosphere. While the session goal might be something set by the Instructors (depending on the workshop), at Scent & Track UK, training is always tailored to the individual dog and team. There are no cut and paste lesson plans here!

🏰 Scentwork… but make it Chillingham Castle 👻🐾

There are training venues.

And then there’s Chillingham Castle.

Old stone walls, huge fireplaces, strange little spaces, centuries of history and an atmosphere that you definitely don't get in your average village hall. 😂

For our dogs, though, it's not the ghosts that make this place exciting…

It's the SCENT.

New environments bring completely different challenges. Airflow changes. Scent moves around walls, through doorways and into spaces we might not expect. Old buildings are full of interesting background odours and distractions.

And THAT is where things start getting really interesting. 🤓🐕

In March 2027 we're taking over Chillingham Castle for three days of training, learning and getting just a little bit geeky about dogs and their incredible noses.

There will be scent detection.

There will be tracking.

There will be learning about connection, emotions and mindset.

There will be lots of laughs.

And, apparently, there may be ghosts. 👻

Although if your dog suddenly indicates on an empty chair in the corner, I'm not taking responsibility. 😂

Huddersfield Scent Club had a lot of fun working in more novel environments recently!

Places like bathrooms and cupboards are more challenging for several reasons, including:

⛔️ spaces that dogs aren’t used to being able to access
🏫 unfamiliar architecture and fittings
🧼 soap, sanitising, and chemical scents (we checked they were all dog safe!)

Recently we were chatting about nosework with some dog owners, and someone said … “but it’s not for active dogs”.

The implication was that high fitness, high energy dogs wouldn’t enjoy or benefit from scent training. And we disagree!

Scentwork and/or tracking can be a fantastic outlet for dogs to channel their energy into something fulfilling and rewarding. This kind of nose focused training can also be calming, reinforce impulse control and handler engagement, and encourage environmental interaction in a safe, self-regulating manner. It can also be a great way to tire out active dogs without stressing their joints or needing to find time for a six hour hike! Doesn’t all that that sound like a brilliant training option for high energy dogs?
