Big Amigos Sports Horses, Howden (2026)

08/10/2026

🏆🐴 WE NEED YOUR VOTE FOR PHILLIP! 🐴🏆

Our vet, Phillip McKervy of Emerald Equine Vets , has been nominated for the Horse & Hound Awards 2026 – Baileys Horse Feeds Vet of the Year! 🏆💚

And honestly, I couldn’t think of someone more deserving.

Phillip has become so much more than just our vet. He’s the person I know I can turn to when I’m worried about a horse, need advice, or simply need someone who understands the situation.

And I really do mean any time. 😂 I have messaged him at ridiculous hours — including 11pm — and somehow he always gets back to me!

Having so many Thoroughbreds and ex-racehorses come through Big Amigos, Phillip’s knowledge of TBs has been invaluable. He’s now my go-to person when a client needs veterinary help, because I know they’re going to be in safe hands.

Phillip has looked after our own horses, our clients’ horses, done some amazing stitching jobs when horses have needed them, and even gelded our stallion for us, which he did an absolutely amazing job with.

Only yesterday, one of our client's horses went in for X-rays and is now starting its rehabilitation journey. Being able to have a vet I trust completely when things don't go to plan is something I’m incredibly grateful for.

Phillip set up Emerald Equine himself, and you can genuinely see how much he cares about the horses and the people behind them. I honestly don’t know where Big Amigos would be without Phillip and his team. They are such an important part of what we do and give me the confidence to take on horses knowing that, when we need them, we have an incredible veterinary team behind us.

So please, if you have a couple of minutes, PLEASE VOTE FOR PHILLIP! 🗳️🏆

Every vote really does count, and I’d absolutely love to see someone who has done so much for us and so many other horse owners get the recognition he deserves.

And Phillip… if you win, I promise I’ll try to keep the 11pm messages to a minimum… although I make no promises when the horses are involved! 😂😂

GO PHILLIP! 🏆💚🐴

⚠️ NO MORE TIME WASTERS PLEASE — URGENT HOME NEEDED ⚠️

6️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ No offers please - I'm already fronting some money towards getting him a safe retirement

This lovely 4yo bay gelding by Sergei Prokofiev has now been let down twice, and I really don’t want him to be let down a third time.

He needs to leave the racing yard tomorrow morning as they are currently short staffed and people simply aren’t turning up for him. I am therefore looking for a genuine, experienced home immediately.

He is around 16.2–16.3hh, possibly bigger, a big solid stamp, named and RoR eligible.

He sustained a tendon injury as a 2yo before ever making the track. He has completed his box rest and rehabilitation and is now trotting under saddle. He is a good ride, but he is still tender in canter and NEEDS the winter off to allow him to finish healing before a very steady return to work.

He cannot be ridden at the racing yard, so he will need to go straight to his new home.

He is up to date with vaccinations and has seen traffic around Newmarket.

The yard feel he has the potential to make a lovely dressage horse in the right hands. I have rehomed horses from this trainer before and they are extremely honest about their horses and produce beautifully mannered horses.

4yo bay gelding
Sergei Prokofiev
Approx. 16.2–16.3hh+
Named & RoR eligible
Previous tendon injury
Good ride, but winter off is essential
Potential dressage prospect
Up to date with vaccinations
Experienced homes only

📍 Currently in Newmarket and can be collected directly from the racing yard tomorrow morning.

NO DEPOSIT = NO HOLD.

Please only message if you are genuinely in a position to take him and can offer the experienced home and winter break he needs.

I have had lots of messages so please do reach back out 🙏🙏🙏

🐴 SCHOOLING / RETRAINING & SALES LIVERY SPACE AVAILABLE 🐴

We have one space becoming available this week as one of our lovely schooling liveries heads home to decompress and take in everything he has learnt with us. ❤️

We have a big, spacious stable, quality TopSpec feed, and years of experience in retraining horses for a range of second careers — whether that’s a complete change of direction, bringing a horse back into work, or helping them develop the skills and confidence they need for their next chapter.

We can offer a varied programme tailored to the individual horse, including:

🐎 Schooling & retraining
🌿 Hacking and off-road riding
🏇 Opportunities for varied work and outings
🌳 Turnout and opportunities to spend time outside
🧠 Building confidence, manners and rideability
🏆 Competition and eventing experience
🛒 Sales livery and preparation for finding the right home

We’re ideally placed with Port Royal Equestrian Centre only around 15 minutes away, giving us access to further facilities and opportunities when appropriate.

I have personally produced and competed a wide variety of horses, having ridden up to Medium level dressage, competed up to 90cm eventing, team chased, hunted, shown to national level, competed in the RoR series, arena evented and worked within the racing industry.

We have particular experience with Thoroughbreds and ex-racehorses, including retraining horses directly from racing and helping them find successful second careers.

We take on horses as individuals rather than putting them through a one-size-fits-all programme. Whether your horse needs a fresh start, some mileage, a confidence boost or preparation for sale, we can discuss what would suit them best.

📍 Howden, East Yorkshire

Spaces like this don't come up often, so if you're considering schooling, retraining or sales livery, please get in touch to have a chat about your horse and what you're hoping to achieve.

📩 Message the page for further information and availability.

💙 A VERY SPECIAL REHOMING OPPORTUNITY 💙

6️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ - PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION

I’ve been asked by a trainer I have successfully rehomed horses for before to help find a very special home for this lovely 4-year-old bay gelding by Sergei Prokofiev.

I’m hoping to rehome him directly from the racing yard, rather than bringing him through my own yard, as I feel this will be the least unsettling option for him and allow him to make the transition at his own pace.

He is a big, substantial horse standing around 16.2–16.3hh, possibly bigger, and is a really lovely stamp. He has been in training and is already named, so will be RoR eligible.

He unfortunately sustained a tendon injury as a 2-year-old, before ever making it to the track. He has completed all of his box rest and rehabilitation and is now trotting away under saddle at the racing yard.

At present, he is still tender in canter, which is why the yard feel the kindest and most sensible option for him is to have time turned away over the winter to allow him to finish healing properly, before a very gradual reintroduction to work.

This is not a horse for someone wanting to crack on immediately. He needs an experienced home who understands rehabilitation, patience and giving a young horse the time he needs.

For the right home, I would also be very happy to bring him back into work and continue his education once the time is right.

The racing yard feel he has the potential to make a lovely dressage horse in the right hands. He has also seen traffic around Newmarket.

I have rehomed horses from this yard before and can honestly say they are exceptionally honest about their horses, and the horses they produce are beautifully mannered. They genuinely want the right future for him.

4yo bay with a white blaze gelding
Approx. 16.2–16.3hh+
Named & RoR eligible
Previous tendon injury
Currently trotting under saddle
Winter turnout recommended to allow further healing
Potential dressage prospect
Seen traffic in Newmarket
Direct from racing yard
Experienced homes only

I’m planning to collect him within the next few days, and if the right home comes forward I can potentially deliver him on route.

This is very much a horse where time is the most valuable thing you can give him. I would much rather see him have a quiet winter and come back correctly than rush his education.

If you think you could offer him the right home, please message me with details of your experience, facilities and what you could offer him.

I will be selective with enquiries — this lovely horse deserves someone who really understands what he needs and is excited about giving him the time to become the horse he has the potential to be. 💙

When “bad manners” finally cost you your balls… and yes, we’ve got the receipts. 😂✂️

Safe to say the attitude has been formally addressed, and we now have physical evidence of the crime sitting in the bucket. 🪣😂

Let’s hope the next chapter comes with slightly fewer opinions, better manners and absolutely no need for a refund. 🐴🤣

Thanks Philip, Henry and Emily/Emma (we can't remember 😆) from Emerald Equine Vets

✨ ALADDIN – 11yo 15.2hh Thoroughbred Gelding ✨

5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ Ono

A genuine, kind horse looking for his person. ❤️

Aladdin clearly never got the memo about being a racehorse! He was simply too slow in training and therefore never really became a true racehorse. He has come to us from Shropshire through a friend of a friend, who felt we could give him the best chance of finding the right home — so here he is!

At 15.2hh and 11 years old, Aladdin is relatively low mileage for his age and absolutely full of personality. He is a real people horse who wants to be everyone's friend and, once settled, is a lovely chap to have around.

Under saddle, Aladdin schools nicely in walk, trot and canter, with three very smart paces. He works into a lovely outline, knows his lateral work and is genuinely keen to please. He has been ridden by a mixture of riders here and has been a really nice horse to work with.

He is good in all ways on the ground, loads and travels well and is currently barefoot.

Hacking: This is the one area where Aladdin needs some understanding. He does not hack alone at present. With time and the right person, we feel this could potentially improve, but we have deliberately chosen not to push him and upset his confidence. He is very happy hacking with company and will happily lead when out with another horse.

Aladdin is green to jumping and jumping is not currently his strongest feature, so we feel he would be much better suited to someone looking for a smart, enjoyable dressage or schooling prospect rather than a jumping horse.

He took a few weeks to properly settle into a new environment, but once settled he has really thrived on routine. He is a very social horse who loves his turnout and his friends, and we feel he may particularly flourish in a home where he can live out with company and have a quiet, consistent lifestyle.

He is not suitable for showing due to some minor marks, but these do not affect his ridden work.

He has no known injuries and is currently thriving in a good routine.

🎁 Aladdin comes with his saddle, girth, rugs, bridle and any remaining supplements, making him a very straightforward package for his new home.

❤️ A special home is wanted for Aladdin by request of his owner. His owner is genuinely upset to be parting with him, but ultimately wants to find the person who will become Aladdin's human and give him the loving, settled life he deserves.

We're therefore looking for a sympathetic, kind home who can give Aladdin the time to settle and allow him to thrive at his own pace. He isn't going to suit everyone, but we really feel there is a lovely horse here for the right person.

📍 East Yorkshire / Howden

📩 Plenty more photos and videos available. Please message with some information about yourself, your experience and the home you can offer Aladdin.

❤️ Reggie’s little milestone today ❤️

When Reggie arrived with us on schooling livery, he had spent over a year in the field and had a lot of confidence to rebuild.

His owner told us that he wouldn’t hack alone and could possibly be spooky on the road outside the yard, so we knew there was no need to rush him. We’ve simply been taking our time, giving him a consistent routine, plenty of positive experiences and allowing him to find his confidence one step at a time.

Over the last month he’s been enjoying his schooling and hacking out with friends, and it’s been so lovely watching him change.

He’s looking so well too — filling out, building muscle and really starting to look like himself again. 🥰

Today, we reached a little milestone that we’ve been quietly working towards…

Reggie left the yard by himself. 🥹

He walked down the road in front of the yard, around the town and into the village, taking everything in his stride.

For some horses, that might not seem like a big deal. But for Reggie, it’s a huge step. ❤️

I’m sure his owner is absolutely over the moon to see how far he’s come already. These are the little moments that make all the hard work worthwhile.

You don’t always notice the progress day to day, but then suddenly you look back and realise just how far they’ve come.

We’re so proud of this lovely boy and can’t wait to see what the next few weeks bring. 🐴❤️

✨ GER — 16hh, 6yo Thoroughbred Mare | 3️⃣2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣ ono ✨

Bold, brave, kind and bred to jump — Ger is a seriously exciting winter project for someone wanting to produce their next event horse.

Ger is a very, very nice 6yo mare who has impressed us with her attitude and, most of all, her natural bravery over a fence.

She is green in the school, but has a good walk, trot and canter and is progressing nicely. She is ridden daily by a lightweight female rider and is continuing to develop her education.

Over a fence is where Ger really comes into her own. She is confident, bold and very brave, and has been hound exercising where she jumped everything asked of her, including walls and rails, without hesitation.

Hunting itself proved a little too exciting for her — she struggled with the stop-starting, changes of pace and buzzy atmosphere and became overexcited. Therefore, she would not suit a home looking specifically for a hunting horse. We could, however, see her being a lot of fun doing eventing, fun rides and similar activities.

💥 We think Ger could make a brilliant event horse. Her family are reportedly all very good jumpers, and she is certainly showing that she has inherited plenty of jumping ability.

She could also potentially suit a very competent teenager looking for a fun horse to bring on over the winter, provided they have the support and experience around them to continue her education.

Away from ridden work, Ger is good to do in every single way:
✔️ Good to bath
✔️ Good to clip
✔️ Good to shoe
✔️ Currently completely BAREFOOT
✔️ Loads and travels well
✔️ Good to handle
✔️ Very kind and genuine

Ger is naturally a little shyer, rather than sharp or nasty, and we think she would really thrive with someone who can give her confidence and build a partnership with her.

Open to genuine offers to see her in the perfect home where she can thrive

🎥 Videos available for anyone unable to view in person.

💷 £3,250

📍 Goole, East Yorkshire

If you're genuinely looking for a bold, brave eventing prospect to put your stamp on this winter, don't leave it until she's gone. Message us now to arrange a viewing or request videos. 🦄
