🐾 Supporting the Next Generation of Vets at Howden Animal Health! 🩺💚

At Howden Animal Health, we believe in supporting veterinary students and helping the next generation of vets develop their skills, knowledge and confidence through hands-on experience in practice.

Meet Josh, who is in his final year of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge! 🎓

Josh has been an absolute pleasure to have with us during his EMS placement. He has been involved in some complex medical and surgical cases, gaining valuable practical experience along the way. He has also been a fantastic help to the whole team, especially during our busy days!

We are passionate about supporting future vets, sharing our knowledge and helping students build the confidence and experience they need as they begin their veterinary careers. It's always lovely to welcome enthusiastic students into our practice and be part of their journey.

A huge thank you to Josh for all his hard work and for being such a great addition to the team. We wish him the very best of luck in his final year and all the exciting adventures ahead! 🐶🐱❤️

🐾 FLEA ADVICE 🐾

The next few weeks mark the height of the UK flea season, so now is a great time to check your pets for these pesky parasites!

🔎 Checking for fleas is easy:

Use a flea comb to search through your pet’s fur for adult fleas and flea dirt.
🪲 Adult fleas are reddish-brown, very small and can jump!

💩 Flea dirt looks like small black specks in your pet’s coat. If you place these specks onto a wet piece of white kitchen roll or paper, they will turn red/brown, as flea dirt contains digested blood.

Even if you routinely use supermarket or pet-shop flea products, it is still important to regularly check your pet for fleas. The pictures in this post were taken from a dog that had been treated with a pet-shop product.

Some flea products are less effective at eliminating an established flea infestation, meaning fleas can still be present despite treatment.

If you find fleas on your pet, our advice would be to use a fast-acting, long-lasting flea treatment appropriate for your pet. If your pet is registered with us, we can supply flea treatment through the practice or provide a written prescription so you can purchase it from an online pharmacy.

🏠 Don't forget your home and car!
A large proportion of a flea infestation can be found in the environment rather than on your pet. Therefore, it is important to treat the home — and your car if your pet travels in it — as well as your pet.

Why don't we recommend treating every pet with flea treatment all year round?
There are several reasons why routine, year-round treatment isn't always necessary:

1️⃣ Resistance – Overuse and unnecessary use of some parasite treatments can contribute to parasites developing resistance, potentially reducing the effectiveness of treatments in the future.
2️⃣ Cost – Treating animals that don't currently need treatment can become an unnecessary expense.
3️⃣ The environment – Many parasiticides can enter the environment after being used on pets. Avoiding unnecessary treatments helps reduce environmental exposure.

The best approach is to check your pet regularly and use appropriate treatment when it is needed, based on their individual risk and circumstances.

🐶🐱 If you are concerned that your pet may have fleas, or you would like advice about the most appropriate flea control for your pet, please get in touch with the team. We are always happy to help! ❤️

🐱 We have had a very busy feline couple of weeks here at Howden Animal Health! 🐱

We have seen and treated lots of beautiful cats, from tiny kittens to some much older patients. ❤️

Silver, our little grey kitten, sadly had an accident and needed her leg amputating. She was such a brave little girl! 🥰 Her surgery went really well, and she has now made a full recovery and is back to causing mischief again! 🐾

We have also had cats of all ages brought into us, including some little kittens who are now waiting patiently for their forever homes. 🏡❤️

🐱 Why is neutering your cat important?

Neutering is an important part of responsible cat ownership and has lots of benefits for both your cat and the wider cat population.

For female cats, neutering prevents unwanted pregnancies and stops them coming into season. It also prevents potentially serious womb infections such as pyometra and reduces the risk of certain cancers.

For male cats, neutering can help reduce roaming, fighting and urine spraying. This can reduce the risk of injuries and infections that can occur through fighting, as well as helping to keep them safer at home.

Most importantly, neutering helps prevent unwanted litters of kittens. There are already many cats and kittens looking for loving forever homes, so preventing unplanned pregnancies is really important. ❤️

🐾 Is your cat due to be neutered?

If your kitten is approaching the age for neutering, or you're unsure whether your older cat has been neutered, please give our team a call and book an appointment with us. We can discuss the best time to neuter your cat and answer any questions you may have.

📞 Get in touch with Howden Animal Health today to book your cat's neutering appointment. We are always happy to help keep your feline friends happy, healthy and safe! ❤️🐱

Take advantage of our new Purrfect Senior Health Package!

Is your cat getting older? Give them the best chance of staying healthy for longer.

Did you know that chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism are common conditions in older cats? The good news is that regular health screening can help us detect changes before your cat shows obvious signs of illness.
Early detection can allow us to put preventative and management plans in place sooner, helping to monitor and potentially slow the progression of conditions such as kidney disease.

Some of you may already have met Sarah. With over 20 years of experience as a veterinary nurse, Sarah is now completing the clinical phase of her veterinary degree and working towards becoming a veterinary surgeon. She has a particular passion for medicine and a keen interest in caring for our feline patients.

Older Cat Health Screen
Book a 30-minute appointment with Sarah for your older feline family member. The appointment includes:
• Full health check
• Blood profile, including kidney function with SDMA, thyroid function, liver function and full blood count
• Urine sample and analysis
• Blood pressure check
These checks can help us identify early changes that may otherwise go unnoticed and give us the opportunity to discuss appropriate monitoring, prevention and treatment plans for your cat.

Because cats are experts at hiding illness, proactive health checks really matter.
Contact the practice today to book your 30-minute older cat health screen with Sarah.
For cats aged 9 years and over
£160 — saving you £90!

All results are reviewed and interpreted by a qualified vet, giving you extra reassurance about your cat’s health.

We're expecting some disruption to our electricity supply on Thursday 6th August.

Thankfully, we received some advance notice from Northern Grid, which has allowed us to plan ahead and make sure we can continue supporting our clients with minimal disruption.

Our phone lines and email services will remain available, so you can still get in touch with us as usual. Thank you for your patience and understanding, we really appreciate it

At Howden Animal Health, one of the first questions we asked ourselves while planning our practice was simple:

What kind of practice do we want to be?

One of the bigger discussions we had was around parasite control. Should we follow the increasingly common approach of including routine flea and worm treatments in a Pet Health Plan, or should we take a different path?

After carefully reviewing the evidence, we chose a more individualised approach.

Parasite treatments are an important part of protecting animal health, but there is growing awareness of the potential consequences of using them routinely when they may not be needed. Ingredients such as fipronil and imidacloprid, found in some flea treatments, have been detected in waterways and even in birds' nests. While research into their environmental impact is ongoing, these findings encourage us to think carefully about how and when we use these valuable medicines.

There is also increasing discussion about the possibility of parasite resistance developing over time, much as we've seen with antibiotic resistance.

That's why we have decided not to include routine, blanket parasite treatments or Pet Health Plans in general.

Instead, we assess every pet as an individual. We consider their lifestyle, environment and level of parasite risk before making recommendations, ensuring treatment is given when it's genuinely needed.

Our aim is to provide the very best care for your pet while also being mindful of the wider impact on public health and the environment. By using parasite treatments responsibly, we can help protect their effectiveness for the future and reduce unnecessary environmental exposure.

At Howden Animal Health, we believe responsible parasite control means putting your pet, your family and our environment first.

What are your thoughts on this approach? We'd love to hear your views in the comments.

Why home visits can make such a difference for pets 🐾

For many pets, a trip to the vets can be stressful.

There's the car journey, unfamiliar smells and noises, other animals in the waiting room, and the anxiety that often starts long before they even arrive.

While many pets cope well, others find the whole experience overwhelming. This is especially true for nervous or reactive pets, older animals, those reaching the end of their lives, and pets with mobility or medical conditions.

One of the greatest benefits of our veterinary home visit service is that we remove so much of that unnecessary stress.

As a vet, I also have the privilege of seeing pets in their own home environment. Being in familiar surroundings allows us to use gentle, fear-free handling and often gives us a more accurate picture of their health and wellbeing. It's also much more convenient for owners who are elderly, disabled or caring for multiple pets.

Caring for animal welfare is at the heart of everything I do. It's part of my oath as a veterinary surgeon, and I firmly believe that home visits are an important way of providing the compassionate, personalised care that many pets and owners need.

With the support of our experienced veterinary team, and while we prepare for our new practice, I'm delighted that Howden Animal Health can continue expanding our home visit service as we work towards restoring the 24/7 veterinary care—including home visits—that our local community once had.

We're incredibly proud to offer this service and to be able to care for pets where many of them feel happiest and safest: at home.

If we've visited your pet at home, we'd love to hear about your experience. Did it make a difference for you and your four-legged friend? Please share your story in the comments.

Not your typical four-legged friend you'd expect to see on a small animal vet page, but we'd like to introduce you to Percy, one of our wonderful patients from today!

Did you know that, alongside cats, dogs and other familiar pets, we also care for alpacas, goats, ducks, sheep, chickens, geese, hamsters, ferrets and pigs? After all, variety is the spice of life, and these much-loved animals deserve the very best care too.

Percy is a remarkable teenager at 16 years old, quite an impressive age for a pig! Like many senior dogs, he's experiencing some age-related changes, including muscle loss and spinal arthritis. Keeping him active with gentle exercise, alongside appropriate pain relief, is an important part of helping him stay comfortable.

Thankfully, Percy has a wonderfully devoted owner who does an amazing job looking after him, and we're delighted that he's still enjoying a great quality of life.

As you can see, Percy really is as happy as a pig in mud!

A huge thank you to Percy's owner for allowing us to share his story and these lovely photos.
