What Growling Means

Growling is valuable communication.
It may tell us that a dog feels frightened, uncomfortable, threatened, frustrated or worried about losing something important.
Punishing a growl may stop the sound, but it does not necessarily change the emotion underneath it. It can also remove an important warning.
When a dog growls:
Create space
Avoid confrontation
Consider what triggered it
Keep everyone safe
Seek professional support when needed
We should always take growling seriously, but we should also listen to what the dog may be trying to communicate.

Reactivity Is Not a Personality

A reactive dog is not reacting every second of every day.
Reactivity describes behaviour within particular situations. It does not define the dog’s entire personality.
The same dog who barks and lunges on a walk may also be affectionate, playful, gentle, funny and deeply connected to their family.
Changing the language helps us remember that we are supporting a whole dog, not fixing a label.
Instead of saying, “My dog is reactive,” try:
“My dog struggles when other dogs come too close.”
That gives us a clearer place to begin.

Behaviour is communication. A dog who barks, lunges, growls, hides, freezes or refuses to move is communicating something about how they feel or what they need in that moment. The behaviour may be difficult or concerning, but simply trying to suppress it can mean we miss the message underneath. Pause and ask: What happened before the behaviour? What might my dog be feeling? What are they trying to gain, avoid or communicate? Are they physically and emotionally able to cope? Understanding does not mean ignoring behaviour. It helps us respond more safely and effectively.

At Ravendale Training and Behaviour, I believe every dog deserves to be understood.
Behaviour is rarely as simple as a dog being naughty, stubborn or difficult. It can be influenced by fear, discomfort, frustration, past experiences, health, environment and whether the dog feels safe enough to cope.
My role is not simply to stop behaviour. It is to help families understand what may be happening underneath it and create a practical, compassionate way forward.
Ravendale provides force-free dog training and behaviour support across West and East Sussex, with online support available where appropriate.

🎉🐾 Happy Birthday, Raven! 🖤

Today we celebrate the girl who has brought so much laughter, love and adventure into our lives.

Raven, you are clever, funny, full of personality and never fail to keep us on our toes. You’ve helped us smile through difficult days, reminded us to enjoy the little moments and filled our home with so much joy.

Watching you grow has been such a privilege. Every year you become a little wiser, a little more confident and even more wonderfully you.

We are so proud of the dog you’re becoming. ❤️

Happy Birthday, beautiful girl. Here’s to another year of woodland walks, muddy paws, training adventures, stolen socks, endless cuddles and making more unforgettable memories together.

We love you more than words can ever say.

🎂 Happy Birthday, Raven. 🖤🐾

🐾 You don’t have to face your dog’s behaviour challenges alone.

Living with a dog who’s struggling can feel overwhelming.

Maybe your walks have become stressful because your dog reacts to other dogs or people. Perhaps visitors make you anxious, your dog pulls constantly on the lead, barks excessively, struggles to settle, or you’ve welcomed a new puppy and want to get things right from the very beginning.

Whatever you’re facing, you’re not alone and there is support available.

At Ravendale Training and Behaviour, I provide personalised, kind and evidence-based support to help you understand your dog and create lasting change.

🐶 Behaviour Assessments – Discover what’s really driving your dog’s behaviour and receive a tailored plan designed around your dog and your family.

🐾 Aggression & Reactivity Programme – Specialist support for dogs displaying reactive or aggressive behaviours, helping improve confidence, emotional wellbeing and everyday life.

❤️ Behaviour Support Programme – For dogs needing help with behavioural challenges such as fear, anxiety, barking, pulling, over-arousal and other everyday concerns.

🚶 Public Access & Real World Skills Programme – Helping dogs develop the skills and confidence needed to cope with real-life situations and enjoy calmer walks and outings.

🐕 Dog Training Programme – One-to-one training for recall, loose lead walking, focus, manners and everyday life skills.

🐾 Puppy Support – Giving puppies the very best start through guidance, education and positive early experiences.

🌱 Adolescent Dog Support – Helping you navigate the often challenging teenage months with understanding and practical support.

👨‍👩‍👧 Growing Up Together – Helping families build safe, positive relationships between children and dogs.

🏡 Right Dog, Right Home Consultations – Helping you choose the right dog for your lifestyle before you make a lifelong commitment.

My goal has never been to simply stop behaviours.

It’s to help owners truly understand their dogs, support their emotional wellbeing, strengthen the bond between dog and owner, and create calmer, happier lives together.

Every dog has a story.

Sometimes, changing behaviour starts with understanding it.

📍 Based in West Sussex, supporting dogs and owners across West and East Sussex.

If you’re ready to take the first step, I’d love to help.
