A whole lot more than bugs... Find your WILD side with a visit to Bugtopia Hornsea! Immerse yourself in an enthralling tropical rainforest experience on the charming East Yorkshire coast! Take an adventure through our beautiful Jungle Trail and spot amazing animals, incredible invertebrates and fascinating flora and fauna from around the world. The more time you spend exploring, the more you will

see and the more you will learn in our authentic tropical environment. Come along to one of our regular Animal Encounters to chat with one of our Expert Explorers, learn even more about some of our favourite residents, get even closer than you imagined and maybe even handle them yourself! Animal encounters run several times daily and a sample timetable is shown below, however these are subject to change depending on staffing and animal welfare. 👀 Think you've got a good eye?

These two photos show the same species of free-roaming stick insect here at the zoo. One is a fully grown adult measuring around 7 inches long, while the other is a tiny youngster at less than an inch!

At this time of year, our stick insects are thriving and there are plenty to find as you explore. The challenge is actually spotting them! Even the adults are masters of camouflage, blending perfectly into the plants and branches around them.

To many, our butterflies are some of the most beautiful animals you'll encounter during a visit, but they're not always easy to spot!

On bright, sunny days you'll often see them gliding through the air, feeding from flowers and enjoying the warmth of the suns rays. When the skies are a little greyer, they prefer to rest amongst the leaves, making them masters of hide and seek!

This weekend, keep your eyes peeled as you explore our tropical house. Can you find all three of the stunning butterfly species featured in these photos?

Whether they're fluttering overhead or tucked away amongst the foliage, every sighting feels like a special discovery. 🌿🦋

Step into a little slice of a South American rainforest… right here in Hornsea 🌿🦜

Where else can you wander through the jungle and find a Green-winged Macaw casually strolling past a Green Iguana? 👀

At Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo, many of our animals roam freely through a beautifully natural habitat, making every visit feel like a real jungle expedition. Around every corner there’s something unexpected to discover, colourful parrots overhead, curious reptiles basking nearby, and butterflies fluttering through the air.

☀️ The heat is on this half term, and many of our animals are absolutely loving it! 🦎🌿

While we humans melt in the sunshine, some of our residents finally get weather that feels a little more like home. But for others… even the hottest heatwave the UK can throw at us still doesn’t come close to the temperatures they’d experience in the wild!

Take our incredible Ridge-tailed monitor, for example. In the arid regions of Australia where they come from, daytime temperatures normally climb above 35°C, with the ground and rocks they bask on often exceeding 50°C in direct sunlight 🔥☀️

That means even on these scorching UK days, they’re still perfectly comfortable basking under their heat lamps and soaking up every bit of warmth they can find!

Half term is the perfect time to visit, explore the zoo, and discover how animals from around the world are specially adapted to survive in some of Earth’s most extreme environments.

Errrrrm… come COOL DOWN in our Tropical House?! 🌴😅

Not a sentence we ever thought we’d say in Hornsea.

But somehow, today, it’s true.

We’ve just taken a temperature reading outside in the shade at a scorching 31.2°C ☀️ while our Tropical House monitoring systems are currently reading at below 30°C 🌡️

Yes. The Tropical House is cooler than outside. We’re confused too.

Now before you all arrive expecting a chilly breeze, the humidity in there is still VERY tropical so it definitely feels different, but these conditions are perfect for many of our animals to be extra active today!

Although lots of our species come from hot climates, temperatures that get too high can still be dangerous for them.
That’s why we have specialist monitoring and systems in place to carefully regulate the Tropical House and keep it safe and in a comfortable range for all of our residents 🦎🦋🌿

So while the rest of us are melting outside, our reptiles and butterflies are living their best lives indoors. 😂

🌞 This Bank Holiday weekend is looking HOT… and so is the zoo! 🐢🦋🦎

The warm sunshine means many of our animals will be at their most active, with tortoises wandering the paths, iguanas soaking up the heat, butterflies flying all around you, and stick insects appearing in the most unexpected places 🌿👀

It’s the perfect weekend to explore the zoo, enjoy the tropical atmosphere, and get closer than ever to some incredible animals.

Today we’re celebrating World Bee Day with one of the most special sights of spring. A solitary bee emerging from its nesting chamber in our giant bug hotel after spending the last year developing safely behind its protective earth cap. 🐝

Our bug hotel provides dozens of nesting opportunities for solitary bees, and as part of our conservation work we carefully monitor how many sites are in use each year. We’re thrilled that year after year we’ve seen those numbers continue to grow, a wonderful sign that these important pollinators are thriving here.

Solitary bees may not live in hives or produce honey, but they are incredible pollinators and play a vital role in supporting wildflowers, crops, and healthy ecosystems.

Every tiny emergence is a reminder of how even small actions like creating safe nesting spaces can make a real difference for wildlife.
