| The law on dogs and livestock has changed. βš–οΈπŸ‘©β€βš–οΈ

From March 2026, tougher penalties and new police powers are in force to protect farm animals and support rural communities.

It will now be an offence if a dog:

β€’ Attacks livestock
β€’ Chases, stalks or frightens livestock
β€’ Causes stress, injury, death, miscarriage or loss of produce
β€’ A dog does NOT need to touch an animal for an offence to occur.

The law covers a wide range of livestock, including:

β€’ Sheep πŸ‘
β€’ Cattle (cows, bulls, calves) πŸ„
β€’ Goats 🐐
β€’ Pigs πŸ–
β€’ Horses 🐎
β€’ Poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese) πŸ¦ƒ
β€’ Alpacas and llamas πŸ¦™

These protections apply on farmland and on public footpaths or roads where livestock are present.

Under the updated law, police can now:

β€’ Seize dogs involved in livestock worrying
β€’ Enter premises with a warrant
β€’ Take DNA and other evidence
β€’ Recover costs from offenders
β€’ Courts can issue unlimited fines.

As a dog owner, you need to:

β€’ Keep dogs under close control near livestock
β€’ Use a lead in fields with animals
β€’ Public rights of way are included
β€’ Remember, it's your dog. Your responsibility.

As we enter peak lambing season, it’s more important than ever to keep your dogs on a lead when out exploring the countryside.πŸ•

Did you know pregnant ewes are especially vulnerable and even just the stress of being chased or worried by a dog can cause them to miscarry or even lead to their deaths. πŸ˜”

For a safe and happy outing with your dog, and to ensure we protect both our canines and sheep, be sure to keep your pets under control on a short lead. πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘

Using a lead helps to protect other livestock and wildlife too, such as ground-nesting birds, that are also vulnerable to worrying by dogs.πŸͺΏ

For many, Christmas is a time for sharing mouth-watering and delicious festive foods with friends and family. Although your dog may be high-up there on your list of loved ones, sharing certain human foods with them can make your dog very ill and could even be fatal.
