Scent Detection - Having had several conversations recently with clients looking to forward their dogs training with a sport, I have been asked why should they consider Scentwork?
Scent Detection is suitable for virtually all dogs, regardless of age, breed, physical handicaps, emotional stability, general confidence and more, as long as they have a sense of smell then Scentwork could tick many boxes:
I often use Scentwork to help with dogs who have social challenges and in fact, anxious dogs do not learn effectively under intense pressure and therefore, for any training to be effective, the nervous system needs to feel safe and balanced.
Scentwork offers a range of benefits including gentle, evidence based activities where the dog feels motivated to investigate the environment around it as opposed to something it feels the need to be defensive over.
I have many examples of socially inept or socially awkward dogs before Scentwork training becoming much more socially tolerant as their scent detection journey develops and evolves.
Scentwork also helps to strengthen the bond and relationship between the dog and handler whilst redefining communication and improving social opportunities for the dog & handler alike.
Is Scentwork a fix all system?
No - such a thing doesn’t exist, not all dogs benefit from group Scentwork initially but, most do and those that don’t, can benefit from private Scentwork lessons before moving into groups as and when ready - many dogs on the verge of being written off, go on to thrive in life because of the benefits of Scentwork.
Like all training, patience & persistence, being realistic, consistency, commitment & continuity are all important requirements.

I have worked with several “Danes” over the last 18 years or so and this girl, Hazel all the way from Bonnie Scotland has to be one of the most affectionate.
Whilst she was on holiday in back of beyond Devon, I had the opportunity to work on her impulse control and social abilities and whilst being a stubborn mare, made significant progress in the limited time available.
Hazel has now gone back home and I hope to meet up with her again on her next holiday down south.

School holidays have started and the challenge starts of finding something to do with the children whilst meeting the needs of your dogs.

How can a dog be brave enough to take a knife, a beating, and years of physical punishment protecting the public... yet still be left without guaranteed support when their service ends? 💔🐾

This is Quantum 👇🐶

A German Shepherd who spent six years serving with Nottinghamshire Police, helping to secure more than 250 arrests and taking dangerous criminals off our streets.

He was stabbed and injured while taking down a machete-wielding suspect. He was struck around the head with a plank of wood while helping detain a violent offender who had already assaulted several officers. Despite his injuries, he carried on doing the job he had been trained to do.

Loyal. Fearless. Dependable.

Everything that was asked of him, Quantum gave.

But now, in retirement, Quantum is suffering from a broken tooth believed to be linked to his years of service, along with painful joint and mobility problems. The cost of investigating and treating his conditions has already reached around £10,000, with charities stepping in to help.

And here's the part many people don't realise...

Once a police dog retires, responsibility for their veterinary bills and welfare passes to their new owner, former handler, sometimes charities. That means the people who open their homes and hearts to these incredible dogs often face thousands of pounds in costs linked to injuries and illnesses that may have been caused by years spent serving and protecting us.

These dogs didn't choose a life of chasing violent criminals, being injured in the line of duty, or putting themselves in danger. They did it because they were trained, trusted, and relied upon by the organisations they served so loyally.

Surely the support shouldn't end the moment their working life does?

But there is a petition that is calling on the UK Government for lifelong veterinary care and financial support for retired service animals, including police dogs, military dogs, and police horses.

These animals spend their lives serving our communities. They deserve dignity, care, and support for the rest of their lives.

Look at this cutie, she is a Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen and you don’t see many of them.
Lively & loveable but a typical hound, once the nose is down, not much else matters.
I am working on improving her lead manners and handler engagement and progress is promising after the first session - I am looking forward to seeing what this young lady can give us moving forward.

This is Frankie, a lovely Goldie boy who likes the ladies a little too much and is quite content stalking them down the road without his owner!!
Anyway, his recall training and focus development to aid owner engagement has been progressing very well and he is starting to be allowed off the lead again.
The future is looking good for Frankie even if his love life isn’t.

This is Teddy. Teddy is an 11-month old Jack Russell with such an amazing temperament that he simply has to go say "hello" to other dogs no matter how far away.
Needless to say, we have been working on his basic training with an emphasis on handler engagement and of course recall and the results so far have been superb - he really wants to please and is always so happy when he knows he has done well.

🐍 Adders 🐍
Now that spring is finally here, we have started to notice an increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.
