Not every dog or cat needs routine parasite treatment. Many of the chemicals used in spot‑ons and tablets are now being found in our rivers, streams and even in wild birds’ nests, showing how easily they spread through the environment. The WVA recommends that parasite protection should be individualised, based on the animal’s real lifestyle and risk, not automatic monthly dosing.

That’s exactly why we created our affordable, easy‑to‑understand Parasites Course: to help guardians make informed, welfare‑led choices that protect both their animals and the world they live in.

Many of the techniques used in dog training today were originally developed for laboratory rats and pigeons. They were never designed with dogs in mind, they were simply the only behavioural science available at the time. But the field has moved on dramatically. In the last 10–20 years, we’ve learned more about canine emotion, cognition, communication and welfare than in the previous fifty.

The problem is: this knowledge isn’t reaching the general public. Most people believe they “know dogs” because they’ve lived with them for years, but lived experience isn’t the same as modern science. There is always more to learn, and every new piece of understanding deepens our relationship with our dogs.

That’s why Atticus created the Essentials Range, courses designed to bring everyone up to date with what we now know about dogs: their behaviour, their needs, their emotional world, and the science behind how they learn. Even experienced trainers have taken these courses and said they helped them see things differently.

So don’t look at these courses and think, “That’s great for someone else.”
Look at them and think, “This could help me become even better for my dog than I already am.”

It’s Sunday
the best day to give your animals the time they deserve.
Create a tasting tray by putting a different food in each section of a muffin tin: blueberries, cheese, chicken, carrot, a dog treat, boiled egg. Let your dog choose their favourite and share what they picked first.

Bearded dragons are one of the most popular reptiles kept as pets, and it’s easy to see why. They’re expressive, curious, and full of personality. But because they’re so commonly kept, a lot of outdated or oversimplified advice still circulates, and many guardians are left trying their best with information that doesn’t always support their dragon’s needs.

The good news is that modern reptile research is giving us a clearer picture of what helps beardies thrive, and most improvements are simple, practical, and achievable.

Here are a few evidence‑based ways to support your bearded dragon’s wellbeing:

1. Create a proper heat gradient
Beardies don’t just need a “hot spot”, they need a range of temperatures so they can choose what feels right. This supports digestion, comfort, and natural behaviour.

2. Prioritise strong, high‑quality UVB
Good UVB lighting is essential for bone health, hormone regulation, and overall vitality. Modern T5 UVB tubes are a huge upgrade from older compact bulbs.

3. Add structure and enrichment
Branches, rocks, platforms, safe plants, and textured surfaces encourage climbing, exploring, and natural movement. Beardies are far more active when given the opportunity.

4. Offer a varied, fresh diet
A mix of leafy greens, vegetables, and appropriately sized insects supports gut health and keeps them engaged at mealtimes.

5. Give them space to be themselves
Bearded dragons use more of their environment than people realise. A larger, well‑designed enclosure allows them to thermoregulate, explore, and rest comfortably.

None of this is about being perfect but giving your beardy the chance to express the behaviours they’re built for. Small changes can make a huge difference, and every improvement is a step toward better welfare.

Beardies aren’t “easy starter pets”.
They’re wonderful, complex little dinosaurs and when we meet their needs, they absolutely shine.

A tortoise’s shell isn’t armour you can take off, it’s a living part of their body. The shell is made from fused ribs and vertebrae, with nerves and blood vessels running through it, which means tortoises can feel touch, pressure and even pain through their shell. The outer layer is keratin, but everything underneath is living bone. Any damage to the shell is as serious as a broken bone, because that’s exactly what it is.

When we introduce animals into our lives, there's many things we think about. Where will they sleep, what will they eat, what toys will they play with. But very rarely do we actually say, how will this animal exist in our space.

At Atticus Academy of Animals, we have a course for exactly this.

Our Animal Emotions and Sentience short course explores what it means for animals to be sentient, how they experience the world, and how their emotional lives shape behaviour, wellbeing, and relationships. Through clear, evidence-informed teaching, you’ll learn how animals perceive, process, and respond to their environments.

A definite must for all current and future animal guardians! And all for only £4.99!

Explore animal emotions, sentience, and behaviour in this welfare-focused online course from Atticus Academy. Learn how animals experience the world and how this knowledge improves ethical, compassionate animal care.

Groomers are often placed in difficult positions, and without the right education, dogs can be placed in difficult positions too. Handling, restraint, noise, equipment and close contact can all create emotional stress if a dog’s body language isn’t understood. This is why consent‑based grooming is becoming such an important movement. It recognises that grooming isn’t just cosmetic; it’s a welfare experience.

There’s now a big push for groomers to access better education in behaviour, communication and whole‑dog health. If you’re a groomer who wants to learn more, there are links in the comments to courses that can help. And if you’re a guardian, choose a groomer who understands behaviour, consent and the emotional needs of your dog.
