⚠️BLUE GREEN ALGAE⚠️

Blue-green algae is most common in non-flowing, fresh water such as lakes, ponds and rivers. Certain conditions such as hot summer weather can cause it to thrive and grow rapidly, forming a ‘bloom’ of blue-green algae on the water. It can also be seen during other times of the year.

Some types of blue-green algae contain toxins which can be highly poisonous and often fatal to pets. It can also cause illness in people if touched or swallowed.

🚨Call your vet immediately if you think your dog has swallowed water containing blue-green algae. The sooner they receive treatment, the higher their chances of recovery 🚨

The hit weather is continuing, this is ggood to know.

It’s looking like it’s going to be a scorching hot today and currently the week ahead too, so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with what temperatures are safe for your dog☀️🐶

Every year our vets treat hundreds of heat stroke cases and, heartbreakingly, some end in tragedy. Many are unfortunately a result of owners not knowing the dangers of exercising their dogs in temperatures to hot for them to handle.

Heat-related illnesses are almost always preventable. DONT TAKE THE RISK and make sure your pet isn’t overheating in the sun.

Temperatures over 24 degrees will be uncomfortable for most of our dogs, so make sure you are walking them at the coolest times of the day or simply keep them at home and give them some mental stimulation and enrichment things to do instead.

If you think your dog may be suffering from heat stroke, contact your vet immediately! If out-of-hours, find your nearest emergency vet.

🚨HEATSTOKE KILLS DOGS🚨

It doesn’t always have to be ‘hot’ for an animal to develop heatstroke. Exercising excessively in warm weather, or being left in a warm or humid environment that is poorly ventilated can cause animals to quickly overheat. Extra attention should be given to large dogs, flat faced breeds, puppies, overweight dogs, older dogs, black coated dogs and dogs with emotional behaviour difficulties as studies have shown they can be affected by the heat more than others. Avoidance is always best, but it’s important to know the signs of heatstroke so that you can treat your dog appropriately and know when to seek veterinary attention should they be unfortunate enough to suffer from it.

If you are concerned that your pet is overheating, you should act immediately, as heatstroke can rapidly become a life-threatening emergency; We recommend to “cool first, transport second” as the immediate first aid response for dogs with heatstroke. Owners should also seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

Protect your dog as well as livestock.

❗️DOGS & LIVESTOCK❗️

However much we love our dogs, they can still cause significant harm to livestock. It is a criminal offence to allow your dog to chase, attack or worry livestock.

It is therefore your responsibility to make sure your dog is walked safely where livestock are, or may be, present. The best way of doing this is making sure they’re on a short lead.

Sheep, cows, pigs, goats, chickens and other animals are easily worried by things that could threaten them.

Dogs who chase – even if they do not catch or bite the livestock – can still cause physical harm to farm animals by running towards them. When livestock are panicked, they may:

• run away from danger, which can cause injury such as broken bones
• bunch themselves together tightly in a group, which can also cause injury and fatalities
• miscarry their unborn young due to worry

A dog does not need to make physical contact with animals to commit an offence under The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act. Chasing or disturbing livestock does cause harm. By law, farmers on their own land are allowed to shoot dogs who worry or attack their animals as a last resort. You must be in control of your dog when walking in the countryside. If you are not 100% confident in your dog’s recall, they should be kept on a lead.

💦DOG HYDRATION💦

Water is hugely important for good health, and it’s no different for our furry friends.

The problem is, not all dogs are as keen to frequently lap up water, and a reduced water intake can quickly lead to dehydration and sickness.

So if you find your dog not drinking water throughout the day, it’s important to try to get to the root cause and do your best to promote healthy water drinking habits.

If you notice your dog has any of the following symptoms:
• Sunken eyes
• Dry gums
• Lethargy
• Weakness
• Collapses
• Loss of skin elasticity

Call your vet immediately for advice. Dehydration in dogs is a common, potentially life-threatening condition. If left untreated dehydration can cause serious organ damage and even death.
