Has your dog suddenly turned their nose up at their bowl?
It is incredibly stressful when your dog stops eating, but before you panic, remember that a dog's appetite is often tied to your and their emotions, their environment, or the quality of fuel in their bowl.
Here are some common reasons why dogs go on a food strike, and how to get them eating again:
❌ Why they might stop eating
1. Food boredom: Ultra-processed kibble relies on synthetic coatings for flavour. Over time, many dogs simply lose interest and reject it.
2. Anxiety & stress: Dogs easily pick up on our worry. If you are hovering over them and stressing about them eating, they will feel the pressure and back away.
3. Holding out for treats: If your dog won't touch their dinner but will happily take a treat, they aren't sick—they are just waiting for the good stuff.
4. The wrong bowl: Deep, concave bowls can actually cause eating anxiety for some dogs by blocking their vision or squishing their whiskers.
🥩 How to bring back their appetite
1. Ditch the bowl: Try feeding them their raw food on a flat board. It gives them a 360° view of their environment so they feel safe, and encourages natural, calming licking behaviours.
2. Remove the pressure: Put the food down, walk away, and don't make eye contact. If they walk away, calmly put the food in the fridge until the next mealtime. No treats in between!
3. Upgrade their fuel: Ditch the dry food and switch to highly bioavailable, species-appropriate raw food. Most ""fussy"" dogs aren't actually picky, they're just craving real, biological building blocks.
If this behaviour is completely out of the blue, get a vet check to ensure they are fit and well.
