Now retired (October 2025), I was the original 'Bug Lady', breeding and supplying many types of creepy crawly pets for over 40 years. (my USP? I do not lie!)

I am the original 'Bug Lady', breeding and supplying many types of creepy crawly pets. My little home business has now been going for over 30 years, in the last couple of years I have found myself being called the ‘Spider Lady’ more often than not. Trends are continually changing and arachnids are far more popular than they have ever been before. I have a bug room at the side of our house that is dedicated to keeping a multitude of creatures. Since moving out of London in 2003, my work is mainly postal but I do welcome visitors by appointment. It took me some time to actually reach the 21st century and see the potential of customers ordering online. I am now fully convinced, business has increased tremendously since setting up my first online store in 2009. In October 2012 my current online store went live, the photographs are larger and clearer, the information is more comprehensive and the online ordering is simpler and therefore easier to use. I am still readily accessible by email and telephone and I strive to maintain my position as the most friendly and reliable bug supplier!

Getting ready for Winter 🍁🍂🦔

I do like to keep my husband busy, he has earned lots of brownie points this morning 😁 My beautiful Agave has really enjoyed this summer and has grown too big for her usual winter coat. She has really scary spines on each leaf so it is a dangerous job to get too close. I love my jungle garden 🥰

Since coming back from Cyprus there only seems to be one hedgehog but he comes every night for his food so I have made lots of places for him to hibernate and perhaps the others will come back too 😊

This month’s blog is now online, I was considering giving it up but so many people at the AES exhibition said how much they enjoy reading it, I feel compelled to keep it up 😂

Our little pets are doing well. Here is Milo with Fluffy, his Curly Hair tarantula. Milo got him for his birthday in February and he has grown so fast, I can say with certainty that he is a male. Milo was very impressed with his new coat.

We also got out Freddie, who is Bob’s (my 7 year old grandson) Forest scorpion. Both boys really enjoy shining a uv torch on her (Bob chose her name 😄)

Milo also helped me make up two nice little houses for the juvenile Mexican Red Knees that I got from the recent AES exhibition.

A lovely day at the AES exhibition 🦋🪲🐛🐜🪳🕷️

This stall was amazing, 3D printed praying mantis homes and all the little assesories to go with it. What a great idea and so beautifully displayed. I just wish I could remember the name of the guys. I hope someone can tell me!

Last day today 😢 Cyprus is a lovely island and our hotel is the best!

No snakes this time but I had great fun hiking around and I did of course see the chameleon yesterday and numerous bugs and other animals.

Honestly, it is true! As I was typing this a giant weevil appeared on the wall in front of me. I went to photograph it and it flew off. I’ve never seen one of those here before. I tried to catch it but there are other people sitting on the terrace here so I felt a bit of a twit 🤭

Here we are again in Cyprus, at our favourite hotel in Neo Chorio, close to the Baths of Aphrodite. Sadly they don’t work, I have doused myself with the magic water many times and I don’t look (or feel) any younger 😂

I haven’t found any mole crickets but I have found this beautiful Argiope spider and several egg sacs, two of them in the process of hatching.

No snakes yet but I did rescue an adult chameleon from the middle of the road. As I leapt out of the car, I forgot my phone so no photos. She was beautiful and wandered off into the undergrowth.

I found this photo from August 2014, I have titled it “the joy of finding a mole cricket” 😁😁

We will soon be off to our favourite hotel in Cyprus again. I may be retired but I’m just as keen to scramble about in the undergrowth looking for bugs 😂

It will be a year next month since I retired and I am still loving being able to go away for a few days without all the hassle that I used to have. The only instructions that I’m leaving my daughter this time are about feeding my hedgehogs and birds in the garden 🦔🦜🦅

Here are a few pictures from my garden. Autumn is coming but next year I’m going more ‘drought resistant’ (it will probably be a wet summer😅). Some plants have done really well, my cacti, my Agave (soon to be covered up for the colder months) and these beautiful autumn crocus appeared just a couple of days ago. However many of my plants (especially annuals) didn’t like the weather at all and what a job it has been watering every day.

The experiment is over 😂 I still feel that leeches could be useful for improving blood flow to a scarred area but - I didn’t realise that they stayed on for so long, it hurts and worst of all I have some raised marks from feeding them which I really don’t want to call scars 🤣🤣

As you can see from the pictures, I will soon have baby leeches and I don’t want to end up looking like a pin cushion so they have got to go.

We went up to Hull to visit relatives at the weekend and on the way home we stopped off to meet up with Tim Baxter, Mr Scorpion man himself. He showed me around his super collection. It was a really brilliant morning, great fun. Tim’s animals are so well cared for and his facility is super clean and organised. He offered me one of his gorgeous baby Banded scorpions, my husband was saying “no she doesn’t want it” but of course I did 🥰 (it would have been rude to refuse 😂)

I cleaned and fed my little creatures today, well I couldn’t give them all up could I 🤷‍♀️

Please make sure that you put out a bowl or two of water in your garden. The wildlife really need it! It’s not often that I long for rain but we do need some soon 🤞
