A round of applause for Ian & Merlin who won the certificate for Most Improved Dog & or Handler for Thursday’s Foundation Plus Gundog course ✨🎊

Ian has been working very hard on mastering a reliable delivery to hand and now achieved this.

Ever wondered what we get up to in our Foundation Gundog classes and why they’re perfect for pet dogs, not just traditional gundog breeds? 🐾

These classes are designed for everyday dogs, helping to channel natural instincts like chasing, sniffing, and holding into something structured, calm, and rewarding.

In our sessions, you and your dog will learn:
• Calm, controlled behaviour in exciting environments
•Fun and purposeful retrieving games
•Building and proofing your recall, around a variety of distractions
•Loose leading walking & stopping at a distance
• Improved focus and engagement with you
• Positive training techniques that build a strong partnership

Gundog training isn’t about turning your dog into a working dog - it’s about giving them an outlet, building their confidence, and helping them learn how to switch on and relax.

Perfect for pet dogs of all breeds and abilities, these classes provide both mental stimulation and physical exercise - often leading to calmer, happier dogs at home.

Come and see what your dog is truly capable of 🐶✨

In the Gundog world - what is 'Handling'?

Handling refers to the ability to guide your dog using clear commands, body language, whistle signals, and hand signals.

This can include stopping the dog at a distance, directing them left or right, sending them back in a straight line, asking them to hold an area and hunt or, redirecting them onto a retrieve they may not have marked.

The importance of handling lies in partnership. It strengthens obedience, sharpens focus, and builds a dog that works with you rather than independently of you.

In today's class that's exactly what we have been working on. Tom & Vesta are demonstrating this beautifully in the clip 👏🏼

Vesta was sent in a straight line towards the telegraph pole, where there was plenty of dummy and ball scent.
She stopped nicely on the whistle, and our lovely dummy thrower Kate casually dropped a dummy. Vesta was then handled to the right and completed the retrieve.

Switching off is just as important as switching on - especially for dogs in training.

In a world full of noise, movement, and constant stimulation, our dogs need time to simply be. Training isn’t only about commands, focus, and engagement. It’s also about teaching them how to settle, observe, and feel safe in their environment.

Calm isn’t automatic - it’s a skill. And like any skill, it needs practice.

So this week, make space for stillness.

Sit on a bench. Let them watch the world go by.
Reward the exhale.
That’s training too. 🐾🌿

Here’s my young dog, 7 months old, learning to switch off. We did some fun gundog work today and afterwards she did her first ‘switch off’ outside. I reward her sporadically for remaining in position (she went to move at one point but quickly resettled).
