Recall With A Vibrate Collar 📳

Riley has been training with me for just under three weeks now for her reactivity. Something that every react dog needs is freedom and the ability to explore.

Exploring environments is a natural way to lower stress and build confidence in a reactive dog. We chose to reinforce Riley’s recall with a vibration collar because when fixated either in drive or arousal her sense efficiency lowers.

Think of it as a nudge to get rewarded!

After she comes back we give her the need to chase through rewards fulfilling the predatory sequence she attempted with the birds.

Misconception of a Malinois ⬇️

The biggest misconception for a Malinois I would say as a professional of over 7 years working with these breeds is that they must always be working.

Both my girls do not work or are in bite sports. Quite frankly they do not need it. It would be more my preference than there’s. So what do they do instead?

Minimum of 90 minutes exercise a day
Detection Training
Herding Training
Canicross
Play
Trick & Obedience Training
Also nothing! A very important skill for a malinois

I taught my girls to have busy days and really quiet days so I would never have a demanding dog needing everything. They will happily cuddle with me on the sofa all day but are also very happy being out all day.

The stereotype for this breed is incorrect. They need a lot but they can just be pets too ❤️

Practising for Injections at the vets 🏥

We use source focus and a tooth pick to imitate the injection process and feeling. This is a very successful technique we’ve done with multiple dogs now and helps remove the novelty away from injections - making them predictable!

There are two things here that every reactive dog owner should be doing ⬇️

1. Learning to advocate and make space for your dog - in these clips you will see the owner is always inbetween the dog. This is a management technique that simply allows your dog to feel secure and reduces social pressure.

2. Actively in training and not avoiding interaction. Many of the owners that joined us were told to completely avoid dogs, people and interactions to stop rehearsal. Novelty creates arousal and increased vigilance towards triggers. The goal for reactivity is to create a manageable and predictable outcome your dog prefers to choose over rehearsal.

This longterm will promote emotional recovery and change the entire response to dogs or people ✨

Impulse Control and Recall are non negotiable if you want a reliable dog offlead.

The ability to recall away from prey and dogs starts with impulse control. Layering it with food, toys, dogs, people and finally prey.
