Heywood Veterinary Centre

Heywood Veterinary Centre Heywood Veterinary Centre is an established part of the Heywood community that provides high-quality care to thousands of pets every year.

We offer trusted veterinary services in the Lancashire and Greater Manchester area for pets, including cats, dogs and rabbits. We also have a Vet who has a specialist interest in exotic pets and is working towards her gaining a Certificate in this area. This means we are able to provide care to more unusual pets, such as birds, reptiles, ferrets and other small mammals.

Our nurse Faye has made this fantastic video tour of our practice for you all so you can have a ‘behind the scenes’ view!! Everything in our practice is designed and planned for your pet’s comfort and treatment in mind from wall partitions in our waiting room to separate patients and separate wards to keep prey animals safe and relaxed away from predator animals. 😊

Help keep your furry friends safe this BBQ season!

Follow a few simple rules so you can all have fun:

1) Block off the BBQ- set up a physical barrier around a hot grill

2) Store firelighters and fluids away from pets

3) Keep dangerous food waste locked away in a lidded bin

4) Never feed your dog bones, kebab skewers or heavily seasoned meats as they can cause intestinal blockages, poisoning or pancreatitis

Phoebe was rushed in to us last week after a ladder had accidentally fallen on her and unfortunately the X-rays revealed our worst fears confirming she had fractured her jaw in multiple places. 😢 She is currently receiving treatment for this but these X-rays show the importance of having to take multiple X-rays of the same area in order to get the full picture; the most common X-ray to be taken is the lateral X-ray, but as you can see if we had just taken this X-ray, most of her injuries may have been missed as they are hidden behind other healthy bones!

Ronald was in today for a sinus flush to treat his pesky lingering sinus infection. Despite being such a big boy, this Sulcata tortoise still is only young and has A LOT more growing to do, he is currently 15kg but adult males can grow up to 90kg!!! That’s heavier than an average Great Dane! 😱

Wet then vet = how you deal with a dog suffering from heatstroke.
🌊🩺☎
Quickly 👇wet the dog with cold water or as close as you can get (not
freezing cold). If not available, any water that is cooler than the dog’s skin feels.
Cool water is ideal, but any water will help. If you only have soft drinks,
ensure they don't contain xylitol, and avoid pouring them on the dog's
head. Wetting the dog will promote cooling through evaporation. Do this before taking them to the vet but don't spend too much time on it.
Afterward, contact the vet and inform them about the situation and how
long it will take you to arrive. This allows the vet's team to prepare for your
dog's arrival and increases their chances of receiving prompt treatment.
Avoid using wet towels on the dog as they can trap heat. However,
specialised cooling vests that function through evaporation are suitable.
