🎃 Halloween is coming... is your pet ready?🐾

While Halloween is full of fun for us, it can be one of the busiest times of the year for veterinary emergencies. Chocolate, sweets containing xylitol, raisins, spooky decorations, open doors and excited trick-or-treaters can all pose hidden dangers to our pets.

A little preparation can go a long way in keeping your dog, cat or small pet safe this spooky season.

Here’s Bramble enjoying the comfort of our yoga mats, that our fabulous RVN Darren sourced for our patients… we have found these help many patients feel secure and assist with non slip during visits… they are always available both in the waiting room and consult room (please feel free to ask for them) … we have some patients that now use them on a regular basis .. doesn’t she just look so comfy and slightly regal 🥰 🐾💕

Fireworks season may still feel a little way off, but early October is the perfect time to start preparing your pets.

Bonfire Night can be a stressful time for many dogs, cats and rabbits, particularly those who are frightened by sudden or unfamiliar noises. Starting desensitisation early can help make things a little easier when the louder nights arrive.

For dogs and cats, try playing firework sounds very quietly while they’re relaxed, gradually increasing the volume over the coming weeks. Pair the sounds with treats, play or something they enjoy, and always stop if they begin to seem worried.

For rabbits and other small pets, make sure they have plenty of familiar bedding and secure hiding places where they can retreat. If they live outdoors, it’s also worth thinking ahead about ways to reduce noise and flashes around their enclosure.

The most important thing is to start slowly and gradually, giving your pet plenty of time to adjust. Desensitisation is the best treatment, though it often requires support from medication or non-pharmaceutical products. Non-drug and drug options are available to reduce noise phobia, specifically Zenidog, Adaptil, Calmex, and Zylkene. Using these products early to prevent a year-on-year increase in fear is recommended.

If you know your pet really struggles with fireworks each year, please don’t leave it until Bonfire Night to ask for help. Speak to our team early so we can discuss the best ways to support them through fireworks season. 💜

💜 Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day – 1st October*💜

Today is all about celebrating our lovely reception team!

Our receptionists are such an important part of Orchard House Vets. They are often the first people you speak to when you call us, the first faces you see when you arrive, and the people working hard behind the scenes to keep our busy days running as smoothly as possible.

They organise appointments, answer countless questions, help reassure worried owners, pass messages between the clinical team and clients, deal with emergencies, paperwork, phones, emails — and usually several of those things at the same time!

Veterinary reception can be incredibly busy and sometimes challenging, so today we want to say a huge thank you to our fantastic reception team across Hexham, Stocksfield and Bellingham.

We really do appreciate everything you do for our clients, their pets and the whole Orchard House team. 💜
