Perfect Pawz specialises in puppy training and dog behaviour support across Hexham, Northumberland and the Tyne Valley, although many owners do travel from much further afield. Led by Anna Bradley MSc, ABTC Registered Accredited Animal Behaviourist and IAABC Certified Behaviour Consultant, we help owners raise confident puppies and support dogs with behavioural challenges including reactivity, fear and anxiety as well as all general training issues. Your sweet little pup has become a TEENAGER!! 😳🙆‍♀️ She once trotted happily back to you...NOW she's diving here there & everywhere to the nearest dog/person/squirrel/rabbit etc! Don’t panic—you aren't doing anything wrong, and yes, it is completely normal!

Inside the Canine Teen Brain the brain reconfigures:
Between 5 and 24 months old, a dog’s brain undergoes a massive chemical rewiring.

The Emotion vs. Logic Battle: The amygdala (the emotional center) develops faster than the prefrontal cortex (the logic center). This chemical imbalance means they act on impulse, feel big emotions, and struggle to self-regulate.

Hormone Surges: Cortisol (the stress hormone) and s*x hormones spike, making them more sensitive to fear, easily over-aroused, and desperate to explore.

The Biggest Signs of the "Teen Phase"....
💥Recall Goes Out OF the Window: You can yell "come!" until you are blue in the face, but they will look right at you and sniff a leaf instead 🤣 Their brain chemistry makes the environment vastly more rewarding than your treats.
💥Selective Hearing: They suddenly forget what basic cues like "sit" or "stay" mean.
💥Boundary Testing: They push limits, especially with their favorite, most trusted human.
💥Random Fear Periods: Things they used to love might suddenly terrify them due to fluctuating chemical levels.

How to Survive? Ditch the Off-Lead Walks for a Bit: If their recall's gone, keep them on a long line so they can't practice the bad habit of ignoring you.
Go Back to Basics: Break cues down into tiny, easily winnable steps.

If you want a dog that actually enjoys being brushed, bathed, and having their paws handled, the training needs to start now—well before their first official salon trip!

Follow my tips to painless puppy grooming:

👉Start with touch: Gently handle their paws, ears, tail, and muzzle daily while giving high-value treats so they associate handling with good things.

👉Introduce tools slowly: Let them sniff the brush and scarier tools like nail clippers before you ever use them, rewarding their curiosity. I prefer to start with a grooming mitt or baby brush

👉Keep it short: Keep your initial brushing sessions to just 1–2 minutes long (or less) to match their short attention span.

👉Make noise normal: Run a hair dryer on low nearby so they get used to the strange sounds of a grooming salon if you have a dog who will be paying a visit in future.

Remember, it's all about building confidence and trust from day one, so take it at your pup's pace and take it slow🐕💛

D'you know one of the most frustrating things I hear? 'You can't let Huskies/Beagles....Sight hounds etc. off lead' SO many breed stereotypes for one thing and another. Of course there's exceptions but WHY NOT? What's the problem. In many cases, with expert guidance, training & behavioural support, dogs of every breed can do whatever you want them to do, you just have to know HOW!

Tiny Mabel will eventually be joining puppy class but for now her puppy parents have had a couple of sessions helping prepare for her arrival & then helping settle her in… a daunting time when this is your first pup! Anyway all is going extremely well so far so let’s hope it continues ❤️🙏🤞
