Muscle Monday 💪

This week, we're focusing on the biceps femoris, an important muscle involved in hindlimb movement and propulsion. It plays a key role in extending the hip and hock, helping your horse generate power and move efficiently from behind.

Signs of Tension:
🐴 Difficulty flexing the hip and hock
🐴 Discomfort when grooming or palpating the area
🐴 Shortened strides
🐴 Difficulty engaging the hind end

Common Causes of Tension:
🐴 Compensation for weakness in other muscle groups (such as the quadriceps)
🐴 Dysfunction within the pelvic region
🐴 Fatigue from intense exercise
🐴 Unbalanced hooves

How to Help Reduce Tension:
🐴 Raised pole work
🐴 Hill work
🐴 Backing up exercises
🐴 A well-balanced strengthening programme

Improving strength and reducing tension in the biceps femoris can help support performance, comfort, and overall movement quality while reducing the risk of injury.

If you think your horse might have tension in this muscle why not send me a message to discuss it further 📩

Pole Maze 🌽

This simple pole exercise is best carried out in walk and can be done either in hand or ridden. The exercise should be performed slowly and with control, ensuring your horse does not step over the poles.

Some of the benefits of this exercise include:

1. Builds Core Strength
This exercise encourages your horse to engage their hindquarters, lift through their back, and activate their core muscles.

2. Improves Proprioception & Coordination
The maze requires your horse to think carefully about where they place their feet, helping to improve spatial awareness and coordination.

3. Increases Straightness & Suppleness
Your horse must travel in straight lines while maintaining balance through the maze, helping to improve symmetry and overall suppleness.

4. Provides Mental Stimulation
The maze offers a mental challenge, helping to keep your horse focused and engaged in the task.

Pole work exercises like this can be a great addition to your horse’s routine to support strength, coordination, balance, and overall body awareness — all of which can contribute to improved movement and comfort.

If your horse finds this exercise difficult, start by increasing the distance between the poles before gradually making the exercise more challenging.

Tapotements 🤛

Tapotements are an effective massage technique used to stimulate deeper muscle tissues. By increasing local circulation and tissue temperature, it helps encourage blood flow, support muscle recovery, and promote overall healing.

This technique is especially beneficial for the gluteal muscles in horses, which can reach up to 25cm in thickness and often require deeper therapeutic work to achieve effective results.

Tips for Stretching Your Horse 🐎

Here are some of my key dos and don’ts when stretching your horse. Stretching can be extremely beneficial for improving flexibility, mobility, and muscle strength, but if performed incorrectly, it can lead to discomfort or injury.

If you are ever unsure how to perform a specific stretch, or have any concerns about your horse, please feel free to message me. I’m always happy to provide further guidance and support.

I currently have limited availability throughout May and June, so please get in touch to book an appointment or to find out more information.

Your horse will thank you for grooming them 🐴✨

Grooming is a great way to bond with your horse—especially on days when you don’t have time to ride.

Some key benefits of regular grooming include:

1. Warms up the muscles🌡
Gentle grooming helps prepare the muscles before exercise or stretching, reducing the risk of injury.

2. Increases blood flow🩸
Improved circulation delivers nutrient-rich blood to the muscles and helps remove waste products—supporting recovery.

3. Helps identify areas of tension or discomfort💢
Spotting issues early means they can be addressed sooner, reducing the chance of more serious problems.

4. Improves coat health🌟
Grooming stimulates natural oil production, leaving your horse’s coat soft, shiny, and free from dirt and loose hair.

Muscle Monday 💪!

This week, we’re focusing on the triceps brachii, an essential muscle in equine movement. The triceps brachii plays a key role in extending the elbow, assisting with shoulder flexion, and supporting medial rotation of the limb.

Signs of Tension:
🐴 Toe dragging
🐴 Shortened stride length
🐴 Sensitivity or discomfort upon palpation
🐴 Difficulty performing lateral movements
🐴 Lameness

Common Causes of Tension:
🐴 Inadequate warm-up or cool-down routines
🐴 Poorly fitting saddle
🐴 Compensation for tension elsewhere in the body
🐴 An unbalanced rider
🐴 Hard or repetitive work

To help maintain optimal function of the triceps brachii and prevent the development of tension:
• Ensure you have a correctly fitting saddle
• Incorporate a variety of exercises into the training
• Schedule regular bodywork to prevent tension or injury
• Allow sufficient time for warm-ups and recovery.

Proactive management of these factors can enhance comfort, support performance, and promote overall musculoskeletal health in the horse.
