🎒🐾 Back to school… and what about our pets? 🐾🎒

The summer holidays can mean lots of extra company, attention and fun for our pets — so when the kids head back to school, the sudden change in routine can take some getting used to.

Here are a few ways to help your pet settle back into their new routine:

🐶 Gradually get them used to being alone again before the big day.
⏰ Return to regular feeding, walking and bedtime routines.
🧸 Leave them with a favourite toy or enrichment activity when you go out.
💚 Give them plenty of calm attention and exercise when you’re home.
👀 Keep an eye out for signs of stress, such as excessive barking, toileting indoors or destructive behaviour.

For some pets, a quiet house after weeks of activity can be a big adjustment. A little preparation can make the transition much easier for everyone!

Meet Paddy the Patterjack! 🐶💙

Paddy came in today for his second vaccination and was an absolute little superstar! ⭐️💉

He was looked after by our lovely nurse Emily, who gave him plenty of fuss and cuddles along the way. 🥰

🌾 Grass seeds: small, but potentially serious! 🐾

Grass seed season is in full swing, and those tiny, sharp seeds can cause big problems for our dogs. They can become lodged in paws, ears, eyes, noses and skin, where they may migrate deeper and cause painful infections.

🐶 Keep an eye out for:
• Persistent licking or chewing of the paws
• Redness, swelling or discharge
• Head shaking or scratching at the ears
• Sneezing or nasal discharge
• Squinting or rubbing an eye
• A sore, swollen area of skin

🌿 After walks, especially through long grass, give your dog a quick check — paying particular attention to their paws, ears and coat. Regular grooming and keeping the hair between paw pads trimmed can also help.

If you suspect your dog has a grass seed stuck somewhere, please don’t try to dig it out yourself. Contact your veterinary practice for advice, as grass seeds can sometimes travel beneath the skin and become difficult to locate.

If your pet needs repeat medication, please submit your request as early as possible to ensure it’s ready before the holiday weekend.

🍦🐾 Happy National Ice Cream Day! 🐾🍦

Today, humans across the country will be enjoying a well-earned ice cream... and dogs everywhere will be deploying their most powerful weapon:

👀 The Look.

You know the one. The “I’ve never been fed before in my entire life” look.

Before you give in, remember that not all human ice cream is suitable for dogs. Many dogs don’t digest dairy very well, and some ice creams can contain ingredients that are harmful to dogs, including chocolate, raisins and xylitol.

The good news? Dogs can still join in with the summer fun! Dog-safe frozen treats can include options such as frozen banana, pumpkin purée, dog-safe peanut butter treats, or even the classic ice cube - still considered fine dining by many Labradors.

🐶 Doggy Ice Cream Menu:
🍌 Frozen banana “ice cream”
🎃 Pumpkin purée pupsicles
🥜 Xylitol-free peanut butter treats
🧊 Or, for the refined minimalist… one gourmet ice cube

As always, treats should be given in moderation. Not, according to most dogs… “every six minutes.”
