⭐Meet our amazing team of RVN's & SVN's⭐

Hi I'm Charlotte, Student Veterinary Nurse 📚✏️

I joined The Gables Veterinary Centre two years ago after transferring as a PCA from our hospital site, Wicstun Veterinary Group, in March 2024. I was lucky enough to begin my nurse training at the start of last year, which has been an amazing opportunity. I’ve loved learning and developing in my role as a Student Veterinary Nurse.

⭐What do you enjoy most about your role?
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing patients and their owners return for post‑operative checks and being able to see the progress they’ve made. It’s also incredibly satisfying when you can encourage a patient to eat after surgery.

⭐Do you have any pets of your own?
I have a rescue Deerhound called Luna – she’s absolutely ginormous!

⭐Do you have a special interest within veterinary nursing?
Dentistry is a big interest of mine. It’s a dirty job, but so satisfying once you see the results! I’m also really enjoying learning more about anaesthesia, and I find emergency cases especially interesting.

⭐What’s one thing you love about working with animals?
The unpredictability. No two days are ever the same, which keeps the role exciting and rewarding.

⭐What’s your favourite animal and why?
Definitely sighthounds – I love how lazy they all are!

⭐Tea or coffee during a busy shift?
Strong tea, always!

⭐What’s a fun fact about you outside of work?
I’ve recently discovered a love for growing cut flowers in my garden – I think it might be becoming an addiction! I also really enjoy running.

⭐What’s your favourite thing about the team here?
The team. We’re like a family, and it’s amazing to work in such a supportive and friendly environment.

⭐If you weren’t a veterinary nurse, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be running an artisan bakery or a floral company.

⭐What’s the best part about caring for patients?
Being their advocate – ensuring they’re comfortable, managing their pain, and providing thorough, compassionate care.

⭐Dogs, cats, or something more exotic?
Dogs definitely have a special place in my heart, although I do really like birds too!

☀️🐾 HOT WEATHER ALERT 🐾☀️

As temperatures rise, please remember that our pets can suffer from heatstroke very quickly — even on days that don’t feel “too hot” to us.

🚫 Never leave pets in parked cars
💧 Make sure fresh water is always available
🌳 Walk dogs early morning or late evening
🔥 Check pavements with your hand before walks — if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws
🏡 Keep pets cool indoors with shade and airflow

Signs of heatstroke include:
⚠️ Excessive panting
⚠️ Drooling
⚠️ Weakness or collapse
⚠️ Vomiting or confusion

If you’re worried your pet may be overheating, contact your vet immediately.

Please help keep our furry friends safe during the warm weather ❤️🐶🐱

🥇🐾 Patient of the day… or maybe even patient of the year! 🐾🥇

English Springer Spaniel Defa has been visiting us here at The Gables and our hospital Wicstun three times a week for bandage changes since September! He first developed a fluid-filled swelling around his neck, and after careful consideration due to complications, the decision was made to allow the wound to heal naturally with dedicated bandage care and laser therapy.
Fast forward to now, and Defa is a total pro at his appointments. He knows the routine inside out, takes everything in his stride, and patiently waits for his favourite part — the treats once his bandaging is finished!
He truly is the best boy, and we’re all so proud of how well he’s doing. 🐾

Our veterinary nurses are there for your pets during some of the most important moments of their lives — offering comfort, care, compassion, and support every single day. 💙

What many people don’t always see is the emotional side of the job.

Veterinary nurses work incredibly hard behind the scenes, often dealing with stressful situations, emergencies, worried owners, and difficult goodbyes, all while continuing to give the highest level of care to every animal they meet.

Just like anyone else, their mental health is important too.

A kind word, patience, and understanding can make such a difference to the people caring for your beloved pets. Veterinary nurses are not only skilled professionals — they are caring people who feel deeply about the animals and families they help every day.

We also want to remind anyone in the veterinary profession that support is always available and no one should struggle alone. Looking after mental wellbeing is just as important as looking after physical health.

Thank you to all veterinary nurses for everything you do — your compassion never goes unnoticed. 💚

⭐Meet our amazing team of RVN's & SVN's⭐

Hi I'm Niki, Lead Registered Veterinary Nurse 💉

⭐I joined The Gables Veterinary Centre in June 2025, having qualified as a RVN in 2018. I have always worked locally in Veterinary settings since the age of 17 (not that long ago 👀).

⭐What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love being able to care for patients throughout their journey and helping both pets and their owners feel comfortable and supported. I take pride in being approachable, organised, and leading by example, always putting patient welfare at the heart of everything I do.

⭐Do you have any pets of your own?
Yes — a whippet called Freddie and a pond full of beautiful Koi

⭐Do you have a special interest within veterinary nursing?
I have a keen interest in dentistry and will soon be heading over to Ireland for CPD to further improve my skills and knowledge in this area.

⭐What’s one thing you love about working with animals?
I love building trust with animals and seeing their personalities shine through. Getting to know pet parents and forming a strong rapport with them makes the role even more rewarding.

⭐What’s your favourite animal and why?
Humpback whales — they’re majestic, fascinating, and truly awe-inspiring.

⭐Tea or coffee during a busy shift?
'Builders' tea… but only of the Yorkshire kind! (Other brands are available)

⭐What’s a fun fact about you outside of work?
I’m a huge aviation fan — if there’s an air show, I’m there! I also did a Wing Walk a couple of years ago!

⭐What’s your favourite thing about the team here?
How supportive everyone is. We really are one big family and work together like a well-oiled machine.

⭐If you weren’t a veterinary nurse, what would you be doing?
I’d open an animal sanctuary somewhere exotic or become a full time traveller. If I could start my life again I would join the RAF.

⭐What’s the best part about caring for patients?
Seeing owners smile when they collect their pets at the end of the day, knowing they’ve been cared for and treated like one of my own.

⭐Dogs, cats, or something more exotic?
Difficult choice but I would have to say dogs!
