An interesting day at the shop.... (I'm now covering shifts at the lovely Gilly Pet Supplies in Cole Green)

Someone came in asking for a choke chain for their untrainable 5 year old dog. Apparently he's too old for training and just needs a good beating.

Let's discuss!

Firstly no dog is untrainable! You just need to find the right motivation...

So let's say your dog doesn't pay attention to you, and wants to fight other dogs. What's the motivation? Physical exertion from fighting. As a bull breed lover and advocate, yes some dogs do enjoy a good scrap.

So why not redirect that motivation onto a good bite toy... build that value... then add control.

It would be similar to taking a Bully out of the school playground and into a boxing gym. Take what they enjoy.... and add some discipline and control. It's not rocket science 🤪

A cafe based session today to work on his barking at the unfamiliar and the unreachable.

Two different emotions 😨🥳, two tones of bark, two solutions!

Barking is a symptom of an undying emotion. Work on the emotion. The barking will cease to be a problem 🚫.

I know, I know, the same spaniel 😆 but he's so photogenic, wouldn't you agree?

It's important to remember (especially with busy dogs) that you incorporate some down time into their walks.

"Park" your dog at any point on your walk. Ask them to sit and wait whilst you tie your laces, lay down while you stop to talk to someone, or play a game of kerplunk from the local you library 🤪. Male the situation random but the criteria the same for the dog and reward them infrequently throughout.

I have missed doing behavioural 121's!

All I want is to HELP dogs and their people, but there are so many restrictions.

I have stepped away from this for personal reasons, including crippling self-criticism.

The last couple of weeks, I have had some referrals that have been lovely to work with. I LOVE Bullies, and I can sympathise with busy families.

Your roughty toughfty bully is allowed to be needy, and your softy, fluffy is allowed to be insecure.

When you dive into the emotional triggers behind a behaviour, the behaviour improves.

When you punish emotional behaviours, they get suppressed, not healed.

Archie is back!

Haven't walked this boy for a few weeks so it was expected that he would be a bit hyped.

The focus was on name response, steady cue, and come-on (to keep moving). All relaxed off lead cues to help with overall off lead control.

We also use "find it" games to channel his focus when he would otherwise be distracted by passer bys or smells of wildlife .

Long term we would focus in some gundog style exercises. Really channel that sniffing ability into a more controllable exercise

Good Morning you lovely lot!

I have been very quiet the last few weeks. Have been having some health issues and have badly sprained my wrist plus its the summer holidays!

As you can imagine 4 dogs and a 4 year old, on a good day, keeps me very busy!

Apologies to anyone i have been late in contacting or are yet to recieve a reply.
