Herne Bay Pet Shop is a long established, independent business located in the heart of Herne Bay. Our friendly team - Rob, Sarah, Amy, Clare, Lara, Kiera, and Annabelle - own a variety of animals so can offer help and advice backed up by personal experience. We offer a free local door-to-door delivery service covering Herne Bay and the surrounding areas from Reculver to Whitstable, Canterbury and

everywhere in-between! In stock there is always a wide range of products catering for all sorts of pets including dogs, cats, cage birds, chickens, fish or small "furries" such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets or chinchillas. We also have a large section dedicated to feeding wildlife - birds, ducks and hedgehogs. We are passionate about providing a great service at good value to all of our customers and their pets. We have space on our shelves for new products…. What do you think we should be stocking?

As many will have noticed we have been discounting some stock to clear. This has mainly been discontinued lines or slow moving products.
But, now we have gaps to fill!
So… what should we put in them?
What do you get elsewhere that you’d like to see in our shop?
Either brands or specific products, we’d like to hear your recommendations. Pop them in the comments or send us a message.
(We can’t promise that we’ll get everything in because there are some products - veterinary food for example - that we can’t sell.)

Enjoy feeding the birds in your garden? You've probably seen the reports in the news that the RSPB is suggesting we shouldn't feed seed throughout the summer months and wondered what that's all about.

Their research has shown a decline in the population of some species, such as greenfinches and chaffinches, which they believe is due to a disease called Trichomonosis. This disease is commonly transmitted through the saliva of infected birds, and causes lesions in the birds throat preventing them from swallowing their food.
When birds eat seed they often have to husk it - breaking the outer casing - to get to the good stuff inside. This process leaves saliva on the seeds that they drop, which other birds can pick up when they come to feed.

However, summer is the prime breeding and nesting season, and wild birds are searching more for food sources to support their young, especially in areas where their natural habitats are being lost eg to housing developments.
UK Pet Food and other bird experts are jointly encouraging us to continue feeding the wild birds through spring and summer, but to do it responsibly. By putting out a range of foods, spreading out feeders to reduce clustering, changing waters daily, not feeding on flat surfaces such as bird tables where contaminated foods can collect, and cleaning all feeders regularly, they say the risk of any diseases being passed on is reduced.

At Herne Bay Pet Shop we sell a wide range of wild bird foods, including seeds that the birds don't need to husk, mealworms, suet pellets, and fatballs. All are available in small bags or bulk sacks/boxes.
