Making the most of a mishap. Unfortunately, the older dogs pegged a leverit on a walk. I decided to try the pups on their first game retrieve. Bubbles (the labrador) and Crakcer (the cocker) seemed to enjoy it and brought it in nicely. Like all the retrieves I'm doing with them at the moment, I don't take them too quickly.

The carcass was then fed to my crow.

After months of beautiful sunshine, the rain and the fog came down for this mornings training.

The fog, in particular, added its challenges with handling. The dogs barely stood out to us, and we barely stood out to the dog.

What handling aids do you use? In conditions like this, I usually use a handkerchief or a card. It certainly made a difference to the dogs. Also, adding a bit of movement by stepping slightly left or right when casting helped us stand out to the dog.

As the dogs progress through their training, it is an advantage for the dogs to have a full understanding of the directional commands without the movement of the handsignals.

P.s. I was slightly under prepared for the weather and forgot to pack Grace's raincover. Luckily, the person I was training with had a waterproof dog blanket in her car, which did the job nicely.

How do you get your dogs fit and ready for the season?

A steady run alongside the quadbike for the pack. Even Picnic at 12 years old decided she wanted to come along. πŸ’› Can you spot her way out the back?

I think getting the dogs ready and fit reduces the chance of injuries during the season. Also, running on the road hardens their pads.

Did anyone else enjoy the breezy afternoon?

We made the most of the wind with a few handling exercises and training into it. All supervised by my mini me. I was using the hand launcher, so she had to spectate from afar.

It was a lovely evening for a walk with the πŸ”« for a bit of vermin control, accompanied by my trustee steed!!
It started well - 1 for 1 after the first shot. Followed by a few hopeful long crossers that left Ted shaking his head at me.
