🐾 Veterinary Surgeon vacancy – Full or Part Time 🐾

We're looking for a Veterinary Surgeon with some experience who'd like to join our friendly, supportive team at Hawthorn Vets.

We'd be delighted to accept applications from vets looking for either a full or a part-time role.

Hawthorn Vets is an independent, family-run small animal practice with surgeries in Henfield, Hassocks and Partridge Green, serving pets and their owners across West Sussex. We've grown steadily by investing in modern facilities, embracing new technology and, most importantly, supporting our team.

Our team really is at the heart of everything we do. Many of our colleagues have been with Hawthorn for 10, 15 and even over 20 years, something we're incredibly proud of. We work hard to create an environment where people enjoy coming to work, support one another and have the freedom to practice excellent veterinary medicine.

Our purpose-built Henfield practice is exceptionally well equipped, including two operating theatres, laparoscopic and orthopaedic equipment, a full IDEXX laboratory suite, digital and dental radiography, a three-probe ultrasound scanner and modern anaesthetic monitoring. You'll enjoy a good balance of consulting and surgery, protected operating time, dedicated admin time and the opportunity to work up your own cases, with support from experienced colleagues whenever you need it.

We offer:
🐾 Full or part-time considered
🐾 Four-day week for full-time vets
🐾 1 in 5 Saturday mornings
🐾 No out-of-hours
🐾 Competitive salary, dependent on experience
🐾 Five weeks' holiday plus bank holidays
🐾 Generous CPD allowance and support for further development
🐾 Sage Benefits staff perks scheme
🐾 Staff discount
🐾 A genuinely supportive, experienced team

One of our vets summed it up perfectly:

"The team is what makes Hawthorn so great. Hawthorn gets the balance of clinical excellence and team spirit perfectly." – Alex, Veterinary Surgeon

If you're looking for a practice where you'll be supported, trusted and encouraged to develop, we'd love to hear from you.

For an informal chat, please contact Jonathan at the practice, or send your CV to [email protected].

Please feel free to share this post with any veterinary friends or colleagues who might be interested.

💚☀️🚨 **HEATWAVE WARNING: Let’s keep our furry friends safe!** 🚨☀️💚

With temperatures soaring across the UK over the next couple of days, it’s not just us feeling the heat—our pets are at serious risk of heatstroke. Animals can't cool down the way we do, so we need to take extra steps to keep them safe, comfortable, and healthy.
Here are some essential tips to protect your pets during this extreme weather.

🚗 Traveling with Your Pet? Cool the Car First!
The absolute safest option is to **avoid traveling with your pets entirely** during peak heat. If a journey is unavoidable, please take these steps before putting your pet in the vehicle:

🟢Pre-cool the car: Never put your pet straight into a hot car. Start the engine and blast the air conditioning for 5–10 minutes *before* your pet gets in to drop the cabin temperature.
🟢Check the air-flow: Make sure the cool air actually reaches where your pet is sitting or crated (especially if they are in the boot/rear).
🟢Travel at dawn or dusk: Avoid traveling during the hottest parts of the day. Plan your route to avoid heavy traffic where you could get stuck in the sun.
🟢Bring plenty of water: Keep a flask of cold water and a portable bowl handy for frequent hydration breaks.

⚠️ NEVER leave a pet in a parked car: Not even for a minute, not even with the windows cracked or the AC running. A car can become a furnace in minutes, and it can be fatal.

🐾 Keeping Pets Cool at Home

🟢Skip the walks: Missing a few walks won't hurt your dog, but walking them in this heat can be fatal. Stick to early mornings or late evenings if you must go out.
🟢The 5-Second Tarmac Test: Tarmac gets hot enough to severely burn paws. Place the back of your hand firmly on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it is way too hot for their paws!
🟢Hydration is key: Place multiple water bowls around the house and drop ice cubes in them to keep the water chilled.
🟢Cooling surfaces: Give them a damp towel to lie on, or wrap an ice pack in a tea towel and place it in their bed.
🟢Protect flat-faced breeds: Pugs, Bulldogs, Frenchies, and Persian cats struggle significantly more in the heat and need extra supervision in cool, air-conditioned rooms.

🛑 Know the Signs of Heatstroke
If you notice any of these symptoms, move your pet to a cool area immediately, damp them down with cold water, and call your vet urgently:
* Heavy, frantic panting or gasping
* Excessive drooling
* Lethargy, drowsiness, or coordination loss
* Vomiting or collapse
Stay safe, stay indoors, and let's look out for our pets over the next few days! 🐶🐱🐰🐾
