🐾 Is worrying about what the vet might say putting you off getting your older pet checked?

Perhaps they’ve slowed down. Their teeth aren’t great. They’ve gained weight, lost weight, developed a few lumps – or you know there are things that probably ought to be looked at.

But you’re worried that a trip to the vet will lead to judgement, pressure, or even a long list of tests and treatments you’re not sure you want.

That’s not how we work at Paws Indoors.

We’ll listen first.

We’ll talk about what you’ve noticed, what matters to you and your pet, and what you feel comfortable doing. We can explain the options – including the option of doing less – and help you decide what feels right, for you and your pet.

There’s no judgement and no pressure.

Just a sympathetic ear, sensible veterinary advice and a plan that takes into account your pet, your circumstances and your wishes.

And because we can see your pet at home, they can often be assessed where they feel most comfortable too.

You don’t have to be specifically looking for a mobile vet to choose Paws Indoors.

We’re an independent veterinary practice offering personal, experienced veterinary care, with the added convenience of seeing your pet at home, but the backup of a well equipped surgery if needed.

Our care includes:

🐱 “My cat knows they're not supposed to wee there!”

Actually, they probably don't see it that way.

When a previously clean cat starts urinating around the house, they're not being naughty or getting their own back on you. We know how frustrating it is, especially when you're already stressed with a busy life, and now this!

But there is usually a reason.

Sometimes it's medical – cystitis, urinary disease, kidney problems, diabetes or pain can all alter a cat's toileting habits.

Sometimes it's stress. Changes within the home, another cat outside, a new pet, visitors or even changes that seem insignificant to us can make a cat feel less secure.

And sometimes the litter tray itself is the problem. Its location, cleanliness, litter type, size – or having to pass another cat to reach it – can all matter.

Older cats with arthritis may even find climbing into a high-sided tray uncomfortable.

🚩 That's why a cat suddenly weeing in the house deserves investigation, not punishment.

Because we visit your cat at home, we can better assess both the medical and the environmental causes that may be playing a factor. And because this sort of behaviour is often brought on by stress, you can also avoid a nerve wracking trip to the clinic in a cat box.

Punishing a cat is unlikely to solve the problem and may increase their stress – potentially making things worse.

💚 Behaviour is communication. Rather than asking “How do I stop this?”, sometimes the most useful question is:

“What is my cat trying to tell me?”

We can usually help you find the answer.

🕷️ TICKS ARE ABOUT – CHECK YOUR PETS AND YOURSELF!

We’re seeing plenty of ticks at the moment, and ticks are becoming more widespread because of the warmer weather, and in Norfolk, the large number of wild deer.

Ticks aren't just unpleasant passengers. Some carry Lyme disease, an infection that can affect both people and dogs.

🌿 Where do ticks hide?
They particularly like long grass, woodland, heathland and areas with lots of vegetation – but they can also be found in parks and gardens.

🐕 Protect your pet
✔️ Check your dog or cat carefully after walks or outdoor escapades – especially around the head, ears, armpits, groin and tummy.
✔️Remember that ni***es can look a lot like ticks and that boy dogs and cats have ni***es as well as girls!!
✔️ Remove attached ticks promptly using a tick-hook. A circular, rotating action is more effective than pulling. Distracting with a treat or licki-mat can be helpful too.
✔️ Consider regular parasite treatment that protects against ticks, particularly if your pet walks in higher-risk areas.
✔️ Contact us if your pet becomes unwell after having a tick.

👩‍🌾 And don't forget yourself!
Ticks don't just bite dogs. After countryside walks, check your own skin and clothing too. Wearing long trousers and avoiding brushing through long vegetation can help reduce your risk.

If you find an attached tick on yourself, remove it promptly with a tick hook or fine-tipped tweezers - a circular twisting action is more effective than pulling. If you subsequently develop a spreading circular rash, that can look like a target, flu-like symptoms or feel unwell, contact your GP or NHS 111 and mention the possibility of a tick bite.

💚 Not every tick carries Lyme disease and a tick bite doesn't mean you or your pet will become ill. But prevention, regular checking and prompt removal all help reduce the risk.
