🐾 🌿 WHY TRACK N’ TRAIL? 🌿 🐾

Mantrailing comes from operational work.

And when someone is genuinely missing, there is one very important goal. Find them.

When mantrailing became an activity for pet dogs, that focus on reaching the person at the end naturally came with it.

But when nobody is actually missing, we can do something rather lovely with those same skills.

We can make the journey every bit as important as the destination. 💛

Track n’ Trail brings together tracking and trailing and gives you the opportunity to follow your dog for a change.

To watch them make decisions. See where they think the scent has gone. Notice the tiny changes that tell you they’re working something out. Give them time when something is difficult. Let them investigate. Let them problem solve. And sometimes discover that your dog has a completely different idea about what you’re doing today. 😄

Along the way, your dog is becoming increasingly skilled at following human scent, working through more complex scent problems and making some pretty impressive decisions for themselves. 🐾

And you start seeing more too.

The tiny head turn. The change of pace. The moment they lose the scent and start searching for it again. The point where you realise you need to stop trying to help and trust the dog at the other end of your line.

Getting to the end matters.

But the decisions, the detours, the problems solved and everything you discover about your dog on the way there matter too.

And when you finally find that person hiding behind a hedge, you might just find that reaching them wasn’t the best bit. 💛🐾

🐾 🎃 HALLOWEEN LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT TO YOUR DOG 🎃 🐾

Halloween can be great fun for us.

But from a dog’s point of view, their very familiar world can suddenly become quite strange.

People look different. Faces disappear behind masks. Doorbells ring over and over again. There are unfamiliar voices, smells, movement and people arriving at the house who do not normally appear there.

And sometimes the dog who was fine five minutes ago suddenly freezes, backs away, barks or decides they would really rather be somewhere else.

That is not them being difficult.

It is information.

The same goes for dressing dogs up. Some genuinely will not care. Others may tolerate it because we have put it on them, but that is not necessarily the same thing as being comfortable with it.

Halloween is one of those occasions where it is worth asking ourselves whether our dog actually needs to join in with everything we have planned.

Sometimes the kindest Halloween is the one where they have had their walk before things get busy, somewhere quiet to settle, and absolutely no obligation to entertain trick-or-treaters or wear a pair of bat wings. 😄

🐾🍂 HOW TO BOOST YOUR AUTUMN RECALL: HUNTING TOGETHER 🍂🐾

If autumn has suddenly made the hedges more interesting than you, this is one of my favourite recall games to bring out on a walk. 😄

I call it Hunting Together.

The idea is very simple. Instead of always asking your dog to leave the interesting things and come back to you, we show them that sometimes we know where the good stuff is too.

It turns coming back to you into the start of another little hunting opportunity, rather than always meaning the fun is over.

How to play:

Take a few small treats, a toy, or a little pot with you on your walk.

When your dog is not watching too closely, quietly place the treats, toy or pot somewhere nearby.

Then call your dog and make it feel as though the two of you have just discovered something exciting together. A cheerful, “Oh my goodness, what’s this?!” works perfectly well. 😄

Head back to the spot, have a little search yourself, and let your dog join in and find it.

Enjoy the moment with them, then carry on with your walk and repeat it later if you want to.

What I like about this game is that it changes the picture for the dog.

Coming back to you does not always mean leaving the interesting thing behind. Sometimes it means that you lead them to the next interesting thing.

One important note: if your dog is completely comfortable with you opening a pot they have found, that’s fine. But if there is any chance they might feel worried about you taking something away from them, just leave a small pile of food instead.

The point is for finding you to feel worthwhile, not complicated.

And if your dog starts looking at you as though you have finally become useful on a walk, I’d take that as a win. 😂

🐾❤️ TRACK n’ TRAIL PROGRESSION DAY ❤️🐾

Some days I come home from work and genuinely struggle to put into words just how brilliant our dogs and their people are. Today was one of those days.

Six dogs, six handlers, a full day of trailing and some absolutely phenomenal teamwork.

Four of our dogs completed kilometre-long trails, including some really complex starts in heavily contaminated areas. And I barely had to say a word. I didn’t need to. The dogs knew what they were doing and their handlers knew how to read them.

There were split trails, river crossings, dogs completing their longest trails to date and one of our newer dogs taking scent from a car door handle rather than a scent article for the very first time.

And the smiles at the end of those trails! The sheer joy of someone turning to me and saying, “Oh my God, my dog is amazing!”

Because they really are.

We talk a lot about Track n’ Trail being something that pet dogs and their people can enjoy together. And it absolutely is. But that doesn’t mean they’re not learning some pretty impressive skills along the way.

These dogs really know how to trail, and their handlers know how to read them. Watching them work together today, tackling challenges that would have seemed enormous when they first started, was just brilliant.

I couldn’t be prouder of every single one of them.

Days like today remind me just how much I love my job. ❤️

🐾🎃 HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR 🎃🐾

There are some Love Your Paws sessions where you know exactly what you’re signing up for.

This probably isn’t one of them. 😄

Our Halloween Spooktacular is happening on 31 October, with a mix of scent work, truffle hunting, clues, games, teamwork and, apparently, a plot twist.

What exactly is the plot twist?

You’ll have to come along and find out. 👀

Expect plenty for the dogs to get their noses into, a few things for the humans to work out too, and the usual Love Your Paws approach of making sure everyone has a good time along the way.

🐾 💭 WHO IS THIS REALLY FOR? 💭 🐾

I keep coming back to that question when I think about the things we ask our dogs to do.

Sometimes the answer is obvious.

We teach something because it helps keep them safe, makes everyday life easier or gives them a skill they genuinely need.

Sometimes we choose activities because our dogs clearly enjoy them. They get to use their brains, their bodies and their noses, make choices and have a really good time with us.

And sometimes, if we’re completely honest, the answer is mostly us.

I once heard someone proudly describe how their dog could wait for more than five minutes before being allowed to eat a meal that had been placed right in front of them.

And I remember thinking: what is the dog actually getting from that?

Teaching a dog to wait isn’t wrong. Being able to pause, focus and manage a little frustration can be really useful.

But sitting hungry and staring at dinner for five minutes?

At some point, I think we have to ask what purpose the behaviour is serving, and whose needs are actually being met by it.

The same goes for the activities we choose.

We might start something because we think our dog will love it, only to discover that they really don’t. Stopping does not mean we failed.

It means we noticed.

Our dogs already get relatively little say in how their lives are organised. We choose when they eat, where they walk, who they meet and much of what they do.

So when we have the opportunity to give them something purely for their enjoyment, I think it’s worth making sure that’s genuinely what we’re doing.

Not everything needs to look impressive.

Sometimes the better question is simply:

Does my dog actually enjoy this?
