This week our latest gundog foundation class had their last week…. finally after various hot weather cancellations. Well done everyone and thanks so much for your understanding and patience.

All the dogs and handlers have been fab throughout the course, and we’ll hopefully see some of them back with us in our novice spaniel class, where we will promptly get those noses down and do some hunting together 🥳🙌🐾

Back on the wiley, windy moors 🥳

From 1st March until the 31st July every year my dogs have zero off lead time on the open access moorland, and god how I miss spending time up there walking and training the dogs. As much as I miss the moors during this time, as a responsible dog owner I think it’s important that I abide by laws that are there to protect our dearly loved ground nesting species. It is something that i feel very passionate about, and make a point of doing several posts yearly to high light the importance and to raise awareness.

Anyway absence definitely does make the heart grow fonder.

Big shout out to Aloka and her humans. I can really see how hard you have been working between sessions. On Monday Aloka settled calmly whilst we chatted through exercises and discussed any issues they were having. She stuck close and checked in when off lead. She turned round and shot back to her owners when she heard her recall cue despite being tempted by me excitedly running off wiggling a handful of treats. Overall some huge wins! 🙌

Both Aloka’s training and her humans handling skills are coming on amazingly well, great work 💪! 5 stars all round 🌟🌟🌟🌟
🌟

Also, Aloka has always been cute, but I think she’s actually getting cuter if that’s even possible?! 🥹🐾😍

Relationship is so important, without it training your dog can start to feel like fighting a losing battle. My dogs are my friends, my team mates, and important and valued family members. How they feel about the training process is as important to me as the end result, and that’s why I choose to train the way I do. My social media feed seems to be full of miserable frightened dogs being forced to behave at the minute and it’s depressing. That to me isn’t what owning a dog should be like at all, we owe them so much more than that for all that they bring to our lives.

(This isn’t a sweeping statement on training methods either. I’ve said it several times, I have friends who train using a variety of methods, and their dogs are motivated and fulfilled. This is about people who clearly just shouldn’t be working with animals, because from what I can see, they can’t like them very much if they treat them the way they do! )

It’s not often you see a non gun dog or gun dog cross on this page, but last week I had the pleasure of meeting Ruby the Shiba Inu and her owner. Ruby is a little star and has some excellent foundations already, but her owner wanted to make sure she continues down the right track going into adolescence and beyond.

In our first session we focused on..

✅Using food rewards in more fun ways to reinforce behaviour. We had Ruby diving into the clumps of reeds in the field like a little arctic fox. It was very cute to watch, and she had great fun too. It’s safe to say, the food rewards were definitely more reinforcing once we got creative.
✅We discussed and practiced reinforcing check ins.
✅Played the catch up game, and another fun connection game which engaged her nose and predatory behaviours.
✅Looked at teaching Ruby an auto sit.

Well done to Ruby and her owner, you both did brilliantly. I’ll look forward to seeing you both in a couple of weeks. 🌟🐾🌟

Sunday post training vibes 😴

When you’ve spent the morning hunting hard through the woods, cuddling on the sofa is in order for the afternoon 🥰.

This weekend we ran our second adolescent class for companion gun dogs and gun dog crosses. This class aims to work on connection as well as calmness. Equipping handlers with the skills to help their dogs navigate big emotions, gradually building up their dog’s ability to focus around distractions.

In this month’s session we worked on…

✅Circuits.
✅The settle.
✅The catch up game. ( one dog at a time whilst the other dogs practiced their settle).
✅Disengagement from exciting distractions.

Well done everyone 💪🌟🙌

🐾 Saturday Morning Novice Retriever Class – Spaces Available 🐾

We currently have a few spaces available in our Novice Retriever Class, held at our fully secure training ground in Salterforth, Barnoldswick.

🕥 Saturdays, 10:30am – 11:30am

This class is designed for owners of companion retrieving breeds who want to fulfil their dog’s genetic needs in a supportive environment.

It is suitable for dogs that have completed our Foundation Gundog Course, or those who have already completed some foundation Gundog training elsewhere.

To ensure the class runs safely and smoothly, dogs must be able to work off lead around other dogs. Unfortunately, this class is not suitable for reactive dogs.

📅 Please note: The class currently runs on Saturday mornings, but from the beginning of October it will move to Sunday mornings.

If you’d like to book a place or would like more information, please get in touch.
