Ten years ago this month, PC Dave Wardell and his German Shepherd Finn were called to a search in Stevenage for a suspect believed to be armed.

When they found him he ran. Finn caught him going over a fence and took hold of his leg. The pair went down together and the lad stabbed Finn through the chest with a large knife, then slashed him across the head and cut Dave's hand. Through all of it Finn never let go, and that grip gave Dave the chance to disarm him.

Finn was rushed to a specialist veterinary hospital and had part of a lung removed. Nobody expected him to make it. Eleven weeks later he was back on duty, and he worked on until he retired on age grounds the following March.

In court the following year, the 16 year old was convicted of actual bodily harm for the cut to Dave's hand. For nearly killing Finn, the only charge available was criminal damage, because in law a police dog counted as property. Dave found that unbearable, and set about changing it.

The petition drew more than 127,000 signatures. The bill was taken up by MP Oliver Heald, with Dave and Finn turning up at Westminster to make the case in person, and the Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Act received royal assent in April 2019. Everyone calls it Finn's Law. Scotland and Northern Ireland followed.

Finn was named IFAW Animal of the Year, won the PDSA Gold Medal and took the Friends for Life award at Crufts. He and Dave reached the final of Britain's Got Talent with a mind reading act that reduced the judges to tears. He became an ambassador for the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, which looks after retired police dogs.

He died peacefully in his sleep in July 2023, aged 14.
