📢 Class Reminder – No Classes Tonight (Friday 17th July)

Just a quick reminder that there are no training classes tonight.

Unfortunately, the hall is being used for a production, so we’re unable to hold our usual classes this evening.

We’ll be back as normal on Friday 24th July, and we can’t wait to see you and your dogs then! 🐾

🥇 Patricia has flown through the levels since starting in foundation with flying colours, literally taking everything in her stride with ease. Patricia is an absolute credit to Haly.

🏖️ The beach is one of the best places to make memories with your dog… but it also comes with hidden risks.

One of those risks is sand impaction.

Dogs can accidentally swallow surprising amounts of sand while chasing balls, grabbing toys, digging, or picking up treats covered in sand. If enough sand builds up in the stomach or intestines, it can lead to irritation or even a potentially life-threatening blockage.

⚠️ Watch out for signs such as:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea or constipation
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Abdominal pain or a bloated tummy
• Straining to poo
• Excessive drooling

If your dog shows any of these signs after a trip to the beach, contact your vet promptly. Early treatment can make a huge difference.

🐾 Help reduce the risk by:
✔️ Rinsing sandy toys before throwing them again
✔️ Offering fresh drinking water regularly
✔️ Taking breaks from repetitive fetching
✔️ Preventing your dog from digging and eating sand
✔️ Wiping sand off treats before giving them

A fun day at the beach shouldn’t end with an emergency trip to the vet. A little prevention goes a long way.

🐾 Just a quick update regarding tomorrow’s (Friday) classes:

Due to the weather warning in place and extreme temperatures forecast all week, all classes are cancelled for the welfare and safety of the dogs and their humans.
I don’t make these decisions lightly and I’m constantly trying to find ways of working out how to keep classes going but with these extreme temperatures it’s just not viable.
Closing in high temperatures doesn’t just impact the owners who are in the middle of a course it impacts on future courses. As it currently stands I’ve given 3 new dates to owners waiting to start a course and I hate having to do this unfortunately but I will not put any dog in danger ⚠️

Keep your dogs cool, only walking them if you can very early morning and late evening before the temperatures rise, provide a good air flow, plenty of water and most of all just let them lounge around.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping us put the dogs’ wellbeing first 💛

Week 5 will be Friday 24th July as unfortunately I can’t have the hall on Friday 17th July due to a performance 🎭 The new course will now start Friday Friday 7th August.

🥵 Panting... normal or a warning sign?

Not all panting means the same thing.

Dogs pant to regulate their body temperature, but in hot and humid weather that cooling system becomes much less effective.

✅ Normal panting:
• After exercise or excitement
• Settles after a drink and a rest
• Relaxed body language
• Tongue hangs naturally and isn't excessively wide or curled

🚨Warning signs:
• Panting becomes frantic, loud or doesn't stop
• The tongue becomes unusually long, very wide ("spoon-shaped"), or curls dramatically at the tip as your dog struggles to lose heat

• Thick drool or foaming

• Bright red, pale or blue gums

• Weakness, wobbling, vomiting or collapse

A change in the shape of your dog's tongue especially when combined with excessive panting is a sign they may be struggling to cool themselves down.

If you think your dog is overheating, move them to a cool area immediately, begin cooling them with cool water, and contact your vet as soon as possible.

Did you know dog bite incidents involving children often increase during the summer months?

Longer days, school holidays, visitors, busy gardens, and changes to routine can all add extra stress for dogs and create more opportunities for misunderstandings.

The good news? Most bites are preventable with education, supervision, and by learning to recognise when a dog needs space.

🐾 Always supervise children around dogs.

🐾 Teach children to be calm, gentle and respectful.

🐾 Never disturb a dog while they’re eating, sleeping or resting.

🐾 Give dogs a quiet place to retreat when they need a break.

☀️ Heatwave Update ☀️

I just wanted to explain why I sometimes make the difficult decision to cancel classes during periods of hot weather.

I know it’s disappointing, especially if you’ve been looking forward to training or you’re due to start a new course. I completely understand that. But your dog’s welfare will always come before sticking to a timetable.

Even if a class is held in the evening, dogs can still struggle to cool themselves after a hot day.

Travelling in cars, walking to and from the venue, excitement, and training all increase body temperature. Puppies, older dogs, flat-faced breeds, overweight dogs, and dogs with underlying health conditions are especially vulnerable.

As a trainer, I have a responsibility to put the welfare of the dogs first. I would never ask owners to bring their dogs if I believe there’s any unnecessary risk.

I’ll continue to monitor the weather forecast closely over the coming days and will keep everyone updated as soon as I make a decision about each class. At the moment, next week is unfortunately looking very similar temperature-wise, so please be prepared for possible changes.

Please keep an eye on this page for the latest updates and any new dates if sessions need to be postponed.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. I’d much rather delay a class than put even one dog at risk.

Stay cool, keep those paws off hot pavements, and give your dogs plenty of opportunities to rest and stay hydrated. 🐶💙
