🍂 PRE-WINTER HORSE CHECKLIST ❄️
Winter is coming — is your horse ready? Here’s a handy 10-point pre-winter checklist to work through before the weather really sets in:
☐ Teeth checked recently🦷
Make sure routine dental care is up to date, particularly if your horse struggles to maintain weight over Winter.
☐ Body condition & weight 🐎
Winter can make weight changes harder to spot under rugs and winter coats. Weigh or body condition score your horse now and regularly through Winter to track changes.
☐ Rugs checked 🧥
Make sure rugs are clean, waterproof, well-fitting and free from damaged straps or fastenings.
☐ Water supply 💧
Make sure you have a plan for when it gets really cold and water freezes over!
☐ Forage supply 🌾
Plan ahead for Winter forage.
☐ Shelter & turnout 🌧️
Check that fields, gateways, fencing and shelters are safe and suitable for wet, windy and icy conditions.
☐ Mud management 🟤
Identify high-traffic areas before they become a problem and keep an eye on pasterns and lower limbs for irritation or skin disease.
☐ Stable ready 🏠
Check bedding, ventilation, lighting, doors and stable fittings before you need to bring horses in.
☐ First-aid kit stocked 🩹
Replace anything you've used or that has expired, and make sure you have your vet's contact details easily accessible.
☐ Emergency plan 📞
Have a plan for severe weather, loss of water/electricity, transport issues and getting veterinary help when conditions are difficult.
🚨 And remember…
Winter problems can creep up gradually. If you notice weight loss, reduced appetite, changes in drinking, persistent coughing, lameness, skin problems, or any other change from your horse's normal behaviour, don't wait for it to become severe — contact your vet for advice.
