Engagement and what is it?
You hear dog trainers talk about building engagement with your dog all the time but what do they actually mean?
For me itās a dog that understands whats expected, moves with you on and off the lead, trusts you and checks in naturally.
A dog that never runs off, or strays further than you can see. And if they canāt see youā¦.., they come runningš
Real engagement isnāt something a dog trainer can teach your dog for you, nor can it be learned by an over aroused, under exercised dog, in a busy park or shopping centre.
Itās a voluntary connection between you and your dog, that you earn through consistent training, meeting your dogs exercise needs, understanding their genetic traits and advocating for them around other dogs and people as well as having consistent boundaries at home
You wonāt get it walking dogs round the block on flexi leads or by letting them pull you down the road, scent marking every gate post or tree.
If you own a spaniel, then it needs to search and retrieve in the undergrowth and run for miles off lead or itāll just get anxious and whine, while a collie needs to work and heard and be given direction or itāll start lunging and snapping at bikes and cars
My staffy needs a little bit of everything, but ultimately off lead freedom is the best way to meet her exercise needs, to do this we had to form a strong recall and off lead heal in low distraction areas first.
Thereās no point taking a dog thatās not ready, into to a high distraction area and then rewarding their over arousal with higher and higher value treats just get their attention.
Slow things down and get them following you off lead round the garden (or even the hallway of you donāt have one) , but get them working for that daily food portion.
Work their brains as well as their bodies. Reward calm behavior and good positioning and teach them the basic Fundamentals
And most importantly, have some fun with it!š¾
