☀️ This Week’s Heatwave ☀️

With the hot weather this week, the welfare of the dogs will always come first.

Walks will take place in cooler, shaded areas (this will likely require car travel) or walks may be postponed if it becomes too hot , to keep everyone safe and comfortable.

🐶 Priority will be given to dogs who are home alone all day.

If it’s too hot for walks to go ahead safely, home visits will be offered instead, so your dogs can still have company, a toilet break, fresh water and plenty of fuss.

I’ll keep everyone updated throughout the week if any changes are needed. Thank you for your understanding and for helping keep your pups safe during the heat. 🥰🐾

I can’t believe I get to say this already- my diary is filling up fast!!

If you are wanting help with training, needing a dedicated walker, or looking for someone to give you a break every now and then, please get in touch. Space is getting tight, especially through June and July, so don’t hold up!

Slots available 9am-3pm Monday-Friday, with Saturday all day and Sunday morning availability (considering they aren’t booked up already)

Many thanks 😁🐾🐕

🐾 Progression Class Space Available! 🐾

Between holidays and house moves, I have a space available on our Monday evening Progression Classes for the summer block :0)

📍 Belmont Unleashed, Starbeck
🕕 Mondays at 7:15pm
📅 8-weeks, starting June 22nd
💷 £100

What are Progression Classes?

They’re a fun way to spend some quality time with your dog while building on the skills they already have. Each week we work on different things, including:

🐕 Loose lead walking
🐕 Recall
🐕 Tricks and fun activities
🐕 Confidence building
🐕 Developing and improving existing skills
🐕 And anything else my brain thinks up 😂

✈️ if you have a holiday planned don’t worry. The weeks are standalone rather than sequential, so missing a session won’t leave you behind.

It’s all about progression, not perfection 🧡

Ideally, you will have trained with me before, but if you’ve done training elsewhere and have a good foundation in place, you’d also be very welcome to join us.

If you’d like more information or would like to book the space, please get in touch! 🐾

ANOTHER MOANING POST ABOUT HEAT AND DOGS???

Yes- With the current heatwave, it’s important to remember that walks aren’t always the best option for our dogs right now ☀️🐶 even with socials (at least from my view!) flooding with warnings - I’m still seeing people walking their dogs out on pavements when I can barely cope in an air conditioned car.

Even temperatures that feel manageable to us can become dangerous very quickly for dogs, especially on pavements that retain heat and during the hottest parts of the day. Early mornings and late evenings are the safest times for walks (even if they are in the shade or swimming) — and for some dogs (like my Obi, who’s bred for snowy mountains) skipping walks altogether for a few days may actually be the kinder option.

But less walking doesn’t have to mean more boredom- with a 5 month old puppy- it’s my time to shine.

Mental stimulation can be just as important (and tiring!) as physical exercise. Using enrichment at home helps dogs use their brains, engage in natural behaviours, and stay occupied without risking overheating.

Simple enrichment ideas include:
🐾 Snuffle mats
🐾 Lick mats
🐾 Stuffed KONG-type toys
🐾 Scatter feeding in the garden (if it’s shaded!!)
🐾 Frozen treats - freezing your lick mats, kongs/topplers also helps them last longer❤️

Sniffing, licking, searching and problem-solving all help tire dogs out mentally while encouraging calm behaviour too.

Sometimes a short enrichment session indoors can do far more for your dog than an uncomfortable walk in extreme heat.

Stay safe, keep cool, and don’t underestimate the power of using their brain 🧠

Heat can get scary very quickly, prevention is always worth more than that terrifying rush to the vet ❤️

I love tools in dog training.

My toolbox is full of lick mat recipes, the entire Kong range, snuffle mats, treat toppers, toys and treats galore.🐾

I’ve been using my toolbox a lot the past week as Obi has been on vet-advised rest (he tried to keep up with a spaniel puppy) as he pulled his shoulder. So I’ve been replacing his walks with a routine of harness on (so he gets used to having it on as he was getting VERY excited) - training session in the garden and then one (or some😅) of his food enrichment toys.

Trying to keep a 4 1/2 month old puppy entertained for a week without walks is a challenge! It took and back to why I fell in love with enrichment tools in the first place - for post-op pets, golden oldies, or those unable to go on walks due to other reasons.

I’m lucky Obi is very food driven, but the range of toys and tools out there now is immense- there is always something your dog will be able to click with 🐶🐾❤️
