Eight years ago, a wise person told me that I could use going through a tunnel as an actual reward for Bella, because she loved it!

It took my brain a while to compute that I didn't need to give her a treat for going through the tunnel, because the tunnel itself was rewarding.

Take a moment and watch, REALLY watch, what your dog finds rewarding.

On a 1-2-1 session yesterday, we talked about using the environment as a reward for not pulling. If your dog is pulling to get to a great sniff, then the reward for disengaging can be actually getting to the great sniff!

We also discovered that this particular dog loves a woolly hat (serves me right for opening my bag right in front of that big snozzle)! So why not introduce play with a special woolly hat for more engagement, or as a reward?

So my tip today: start watching and listening to your dog. Food isn't always the be-all and end-all of positive reinforcement.

If walks are a chore and you're wondering if today is the day you dislocate your shoulder 😬 try this pattern game instead 👇

1️⃣ Stand still, say "three", then feed a treat. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

2️⃣ Stand still, say "two, three", then feed a treat. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

3️⃣ Stand still, say "one, two, three", then feed a treat. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

4️⃣ Start walking backwards while doing Step 3.

5️⃣ Now start walking forwards doing Step 3.

As always, start in a low distraction environment, indoors or in the garden, then slowly introduce it outside.

Seeing another dog is now Rascal's cue to check in with me 🐾

For a long time, barking and lunging was Rascal's default. Two bad experiences plus undiagnosed pain meant other dogs predicted a negative experience.

Pain managed, and engage-disengage gave him a better option. And it works for any trigger, not just dogs.

Step 1 - Engage: Let them notice the trigger. Don't distract or cue anything. Say your marker word (or click) the second they see the trigger, then feed. Keep marking and rewarding every time they look at the trigger.

Step 2 - Disengage: Let them notice the trigger, now wait 2 seconds... if they understand step 1 they will look at you for their food. You can then say your marker word (or click for engaging with you). The trigger has become the cue to check in with you.

Step 3: Reduce the distance slowly. Only when your dog is relaxed and checking in reliably. If they struggle, go back a step. That's useful information.

🌟 STEP ZERO! Rule out pain first! 🌟

If your dog's behaviour changes suddenly, or they're reactive for no obvious reason, get a vet and physio check first. You can't out train pain 😔

Here's a gentle reminder of ways you can minimise the risk to your dog over the next few weeks.
