A lot of professionals will convince you that your dogs reactivity comes from a place of fear and panic, and although this can be a major cause of these behaviours-more often than not what we’re actually seeing is a dog who is struggling from not getting access to the thing they want. In the context of reactivity, it’s our dog getting frustrated at being restricted from being allowed to interact with the other dog. This causes them to lash out in an aggressive looking way to break free of the restriction. Eventually the dog learns this is the appropriate way to act when they see dogs. It usually has nothing to do with fear.

In this video you’re seeing the “reactive behaviour” (the barking, lunging, and jumping) only happens when the dog is being removed from the situation. This shows that the dog in training is more concerned with the dog LEAVING than it is coming close.

I didn’t realise how much I clap my hands at dogs when we’re playing until I watched this clip back in

Comment “Bootcamp” for more info!

Sully is a great example of how quick a transformation can occur when the owner is willing to step up and do whatever they can to achieve what they want to achieve with their dog

This was my first session with this rottie and as much as his over- possession of objects is in an issue, I wasn’t in a place with him where I could challenge him to drop that object.

When I say that, I mean me and this dog had no prior relationship. He didn’t know me and I didn’t know him, the last thing you want to do to one of these breeds is put pressure on them when you have no relationship to back that up on.

That would be like you thinking you’re adding water to a fire then finding out it’s gasoline. You’re suddenly gonna get a much bigger fire.

That’s why it was so important that I noticed this in him, so I was able to de-escalate the situation and come back to solve his over possession later when we have a stronger relationship.

One of the biggest and most important training tools out there…

Decompression

Allowing the dog to relax in its environment around new people is something that has to be done before learning starts

The way your dog’s brain isn’t totally unlike how your own brain works especially with something like reactivity. But when you really think about how your dog is developing, a lot of things can start to make sense.

Comment “stubborn” and I’ll send you my free reactivity guide

If you have a reactive dog then exposure to their triggers is going to be a necessary part of their rehabilitation.

Things like group classes and pack walks can only do so much before they stop becoming helpful.

This is because your dog can quickly get used to the familiar dogs-it’s not very “realistic”.

Dog parks create an enclosed area where all of your dogs triggers can be tested-loud dogs, fast moving dogs, pushy dogs, etc

But please-just stay outside of the dog park😂
