Its come to our attention that a hate campaign has been created in social media.
The mare in question turned up at the yard in a less than satisfactory state and in hindsight, we should of turned them away.
However the owner had travelled 5hrs and had given the mare a shot of PG in an attempt that she would be ready to cover in 48hrs.
The drug was given without veterinary advice as to where the mare was in her cycle.
The mare was teased and was not in season so she was scanned and she was not cycling at all and the owner was told all of this.
The owner was aware the mare would be joining the mare herd and she was happy with that.
Haylage was adlib in the field as there isn't a great deal of grass growth .
The mare didn't arrive with rugs or any specific feeding instructions.
After several cold spells the mare was noticably lossing weight ,so she was then rugged up using our rugs and was starting to be feed separately.
The owner was made aware of this and replied " my husband forgot to leave the rugs" she then went on to tell me how shes usually rugged and "having 2 feeds a day with a balancer".
I sent the owner pics and told her that i am struggling with the mare but im doing what I can.
She then thanked me for everything i was doing and that "shes not an easy mare"..
Finally , I asked the owner to pick up the mare asap as I could not control the weight loss.
The owner admitted she was worried this could happen. At no point in any discussions did the owner state that the mare was a windsucker. When asked she claimed that she hadnt seen her do it for a while and forgot to say.
The husband turned up and took the mare.
I apologised that the mare hadn't thrived and stated I wasn't happy but showed him the efforts we had gone to help the mare. He also agreed that it was a concern she would drop off as shes not easy.
Here at the stud we are able to cater for all types of mares on different packages if owners simply tell the truth.
