Imagine having a job where your tools were thousands of dried flower heads… 🌿

Before modern finishing methods, woollen cloth was often softened using the prickly heads of teasel plants. The process, known as “raising the nap,” lifted the fibres of damp cloth to give it a soft, fluffy finish.

To speed things up, mills developed the Teasel Gig — a machine fitted with around 3,000 carefully arranged teasel heads. As the cloth passed over them, the natural hooks gently combed the surface, producing a remarkably even finish.

Keeping these machines working was the job of the skilled “Teasel Man.” He travelled between mills replacing worn teasels and arranging new ones with great precision.

Many of the teasels used by Britain’s textile industry were specially grown in Somerset, where they were cultivated specifically for cloth finishing.

It’s a fascinating example of industry copying nature — mechanising a traditional craft while still relying on the plant itself.
