Did you know vet physios can help with home exercise & management plans too? 🐴🐶

Physiotherapy isn’t just what happens during an appointment. A big part of rehab is giving you the tools to continue your animal’s progress at home!

🐶 DOGS
Home exercises can help improve:
• Strength
• Balance & proprioception
• Coordination
• Body awareness

Exercises might include sit-to-stands, weight shifting, backing up, balance work and poles/cavaletti.
And these can be progressed over time and as for sporting & working dogs exercises can be made more specific to the activities they need to return to or strengthen for🐾

🐴 HORSES
Equine home programmes can include:
• Weight shifting
• Stretches
• In-hand exercises/long reining
• Pole work & raised poles
• Backing up
• Hill work
• Gradually increasing ridden or in-hand exercise

These exercises can be progressed over time to develop strength, balance, coordination and movement quality.

📋 Every plan is individual
Your physio can help you understand what to do, how to do it, how often to do it and when to progress.
The aim is to make rehabilitation practical, achievable and something you can continue between appointments 💙
Physio isn’t just treatment — it’s giving you the tools to help your animal keep progressing at home too!

Incredible day at the Horses Inside Out Anatomy Exhibition! 🫀

So much to learn and plenty to recap! It’s amazing how much there is to learn about the equine body and how anatomy influences movement, soundness and performance. 🦴🐴

And it was great to see some pole work in action too! I’ll definitely be taking some ideas and advice away to put into practice at home 🐎

A brilliant, educational day and one that has definitely given me lots to think about and apply in my field of work!

At The Elms K9 Rehabilitation Centre we provide physiotherapy and hydrotherapy for dogs following recovery of IVDD. Some of these are post-surgery others may be conservatively managed. Through our work, we have identified an urgent need for short-term residential rehabilitation. Some owners cannot safely provide the intensive care their dog requires immediately after surgery or during the early stages of conservative treatment. This may be because the owner is elderly or disabled, has limited mobility, lacks suitable support at home, or has work commitments that make continuous care impossible. For example, a dog that would ordinarily attend daycare may no longer be eligible to do so while recovering, leaving its owner without an appropriate care option.
The Elms K9 Rehab has an adjacent outbuilding that we propose to convert into a small, dedicated residential rehabilitation wing. This would allow us to take in Rescue Dachshunds post IVDD surgery when we do not have fosterers available and it would allow us to offer this facility to owners at a charge which would then put money back into the charity to help other dogs.

Did you know dogs are really good at hiding pain and compensating for discomfort? 🐶

Even if your dog isn’t showing an obvious limp or lameness, they may still be compensating and carrying tension in other areas of their body.

In this video, you can see how a dog can develop tension and areas of discomfort through their back, despite looking fit, healthy and happy.

This is why regular physiotherapy can be so beneficial - helping to identify and address those small niggles and areas of tension before they potentially develop into bigger issues 💚

Here, we used laser therapy alongside some basic massage techniques to help reduce the tension. The difference on re-palpation afterwards was amazing - it felt like a completely different back!

Think your dog could benefit from some physio?

Did you know I’m a member of the NAVP? 🐾🐴

If you don’t know what this means, NAVP stands for the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists.

Being a member means I work within the professional standards and code of conduct expected of veterinary physiotherapists, helping to ensure I provide safe, ethical and evidence-based care for the animals I work with.

Veterinary physiotherapy forms part of the wider veterinary care team. Veterinary physiotherapists work under veterinary consent, alongside veterinary surgeons and other professionals involved in an animal’s care. This multidisciplinary approach allows everyone to work together towards the same goal - achieving the best possible outcome for each animal. 🐶🐴🐱

Every animal is different, so treatment should always be tailored to their individual needs, veterinary diagnosis and rehabilitation goals.
