🐾BLUE GREEN ALGAE WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS: Look Before They Leap! ☀️🌊
When the weather warms up, there is nothing better than watching our dogs cool off with a splash in the water. But before you let your pup take a dip, please take a close look at the water first.
Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) thrive in warm, stagnant water, and it is incredibly toxic to dogs.
Here is what you need to know to keep your best friend safe:
It acts fast: ⚠⚠⚠
If a dog drinks contaminated water, or even licks the algae off their fur after a swim, it can be fatal in a matter of minutes.
What to look for: 👀
It doesn't always look like "algae." Check out the image attached—it can look like a thick green pea soup, spilt paint on the surface, floating green mats, or even greenish streaks in the water.
When in doubt, stay out: ❌
If the water looks murky, has a strange colour, or has a strong musty smell, keep your dog on a leash and do not allow them near the water
🚨 If you suspect your dog has come into contact with blue-green algae, get them to a vet immediately. It is a medical emergency❗
Let’s keep our pups safe this summer! 🐕❤️
