Veterinary Nursing Assistant

Hird and Partners Shelf Equine Hospital Based in Halifax West Yorkshire | RCVS-Accredited Equine Hospital

We have one full time fixed term (maternity cover) position available, with a potential opportunity for a permanent position for the right candidate.

About the Role:
We are looking to recruit a compassionate and enthusiastic Veterinary Nursing Assistant to support our experienced veterinary surgeons and nursing team in all aspects of equine care. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to work in a busy, supportive environment with a strong focus on clinical excellence and animal welfare.

There are two shift patterns that run between the hours of 7 AM & 7 PM, and a 1 in 4 weekend rota.

Key Responsibilities:
• Assisting vets and nurses with routine and emergency procedures
• Assisting with Lameness work ups to include; trotting up, lunging and procedure preparation
• Providing daily care and handling of inpatients
• Carrying out general yard duties, including mucking out, feeding and grooming
• Preparing and maintaining equipment and clinical areas
• Supporting with administrative duties and client communication
• Maintaining a high standard of hygiene and infection control
About You:
• Experience in the equine industry
• Confident handling a variety of horses including stallions, foals, and youngstock
• A genuine passion for animal welfare and teamwork
• Excellent communication and organisational skills
• A proactive and positive attitude
• Previous experience in a veterinary environment is desirable but not essential

Hospital Notice

Please be advised that the hospital will be closed for routine appointments tomorrow, Wednesday 29 July, to allow staff to attend the funeral of Gillian Crossley.
The hospital will remain open for emergency care, as Gillian would not have wanted the vital work to stop.

We would like to thank our team for their support and commitment in helping to keep the hospital running while we come together to pay our respects to our dear friend and colleague.

Sadly, Gillian passed away unexpectedly on 13 July. Her passing came as a great shock to us all.

Gillian was a much-loved and valued member of our team. She was integral to the development of the hospital from its very beginning and made an enormous contribution throughout her years with us.

She will be remembered not only for her dedication and commitment but also for her fabulous character and wicked sense of humour, which brought joy to so many.

You will be deeply missed, Gillian, but never forgotten. Your legacy, kindness, and laughter will remain with us always.
Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time.
